There's certainly a lot to like about the Pixel 9 Pro XL. I love the new design, the new AI skills are at least great fun to play around with. The cameras aren't much of a step up over the last model, but the phone can take great photos in a variety of conditions, often delivering better-looking shots than its biggest competitors. The Pixel's image generation and conversational Gemini Live are the main things setting the phones apart from the competition right now, and if those features leave you cold then you can probably look elsewhere. AI will only become more a part of all phones with Samsung expanding its Galaxy AI across its phone line and Apple launching Apple Intelligence for its newer iPhones.

In our review, we had said that Pixel 9 “gives us the most affordable seat in the house for experiencing Google’s AI magic show, not just for the immediate but also for the long-term future”. Well, the Pixel 9 Pro XL gives you the best seat in the house for the same purpose. The likes of the Galaxy S24 Ultra and the OnePlus 12 might handle gaming better and also serve up better benchmark scores, but then this is a device for a very different segment – one that values the Pixel Android experience and also wants to stay up to speed with the latest on the platform. If you are looking for a gaming and spec monster, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is not for you.

Despite the mouthful of a name, the new big Pixel is really a small but meaningful upgrade over the 8 Pro. It's a culmination of many years of iteration and optimization, uncomfortably permeated by a miasma of AI hype. My take? Ignore the AI if you want, and just buy the darn thing. If you want a big phone, get the Pixel 9 Pro XL. If you want a medium-sized phone and can afford the Pro, get the 9 Pro. If you want the the best phone for most people, get the Pixel 9. And if you’re the sicko who wants something to fold, the 9 Pro Fold will almost certainly be the foldable to beat when it debuts early next month. Despite being overshadowed by Google’s AI ventures, the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s success simply as a superb smartphone cannot be overstated.

I feel conflicted about the Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL. On the one hand, these are the first Pixels I've actually wanted to own. They feel great to hold, are gorgeous, and deliver a top-notch experience. On the flip side, Google has included what feels like misguided software, going far beyond the already somewhat iffy sketch-to-image feature found in Samsung phones.

On the one hand, I suppose it isn’t surprising that the successor to one of 2023’s best smartphones is also excellent. But it’s the level of improvement in certain areas where Google surprised me this year. I’ve discussed it enough, but the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s hardware is unfathomably good. Google’s Pixel hardware has always felt just a bit behind the competition, but it’s now on par with — if not better than — the latest flagships from Samsung and Apple. It’s also impressive that overheating and battery life are nonissues this year, as these are two things that have notoriously been a thorn in the side of Pixel phones. Throw that together with the expected excellence in camera quality, (mostly) good AI features, and clean, up-to-date software, and you’re looking at a darn good package.

Over the years, Google has figured out clever ways to differentiate its Pixel line from other phones in meaningful ways. Pixel-exclusive features like Call Screening, advanced spam detection, and Pixel VPN have been mainstays of the line for years, while new Pixel-exclusive features like Pixel Screenshots, Pixel Studio, and camera modes like Add Me are sure to make your friends and family jealous. However, there's an underlying upfront value problem that continues to grow. Pixel is once again $100 more than the previous year. Tensor is still slower than other competing processors and heats up more quickly than those, too. Google hasn't improved its display dimming rate as other companies have, and the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is problematic for some people, too.

Not to mention, there’s not a big jump in performance between the two Pro iterations, which begets the question: why pay more when you can get almost the same value? For those who are taken in by the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL’s allure nonetheless, the compact powerhouse promises to impress with some party tricks. The Google 9 Pro XL improves on the nitty-gritty to deliver delightful hardware and photography oomph, even if its overall appeal is diminished by the awkward naming disconnect and inconsistent AI offerings.

The story of the Google Pixel is one of a lot of back and forth. At first, we saw the company try to tackle a smartphone competition that just did not work out with the Nexus. And so we went from this affordable approach into something more premium as companies like Apple and Samsung were not having a problem in making a market for themselves within that Realm. As a result the pixel was good in that it differentiated itself as a computational photography phone, at a time when it was still new enough to be considered an innovation. Today this is what you know as AI, and it allowed Google to stick to salvage old hardware for years and keep the cost down.

The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, Google’s premium Android phones for 2024 come in 2 sizes, and we review both in this video. They both feature lots of Gemini AI and a host of hardware improvements including 3,000 nits peak OLED Super Actua displays, the new Tensor G4 processor with vapor chamber, longer battery life, a new design and faster charging. It's too bad that Google has already spent all our sympathy points on its current state of Gemini smarts. Others would be even less forgiving since it's a price hike with no tangible improvements to power or battery life. Also, we're not sure if 128GB configurations are still relevant in the premium space, especially when consumers no longer get physical storage alternatives (no microSD card tray) or are expected to pay for more cloud storage (don't forget, these prices don't factor in Google One subscriptions yet). Their costs rack up once you're going into 256GB or higher territory. It's also puzzling why Google didn't bother with more modern (and faster) UFS storage.Anyway, they're still pretty phones that shoot well and work well, so they get a pass this year. Here's hoping that Google will tone down the crazy a little.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL is a well-rounded smartphone with strong AI integration, a refined design, and a high-quality display. While the camera hardware remains similar to previous models, Google's software enhancements, such as AI imaging tools, provide a competitive edge. However, for those expecting significant advancements in camera hardware, the Pixel 9 Pro XL may not be as compelling as its competitors. Given its price point, waiting for a price drop could make it a more attractive option for potential buyers.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is a contender for best Android phone this year, even if you don't plan to use its on-device AI features. While the new model is Google's most expensive phone (barring foldables) yet, the price bump is justified by improvements in aspects that traditionally held the Pixel line back, such as charging speed, performance, and build quality. With the reintroduction of an XL model this year, the smaller Pixel 9 Pro should appeal to users who want a more comfortable device without compromising on specs and camera hardware. And if both phones are out of your budget, but you want the core features, consider the cheaper Pixel 9.

Priced at Rs. 1,24,999 for the base 256GB variant and Rs. 1,39,999 for the 512GB variant, Google's Pixel 9 Pro XL, in terms of hardware, is basically the top-end Pro model we wanted to see last year. Instead, all we got was a Pixel 8 Pro, which was hard to recommend as it was not a big improvement over the Pixel 7 Pro it attempted to replace. While this year's Pixel 9 Pro XL is not as advanced as Samsung or Vivo's flagships in terms of raw performance and hardware, it's packed with AI features that can literally change the way you work or even exist socially. Google pitches these AI features as "helpful" or "time-saving" when getting a variety of things done, but it does cross a few lines in its quest to impress users.

While the price may seem steep, there is much more to this smartphone than just its premium tag. Despite how this might sound: the Pixel 9 Pro XL has been a significant surprise. Google was loud and proud about its AI functionality at Made by Google, but the core device is the zenith of what the series has been able to offer to date – something I feel like we’re saying ad nauseam with each release. At its best, I have not enjoyed a new Android phone like this for a long time. At its worst – and according to lots of vocal Pixel detractors – it’s another overpriced Pixel that doesn’t offer the best of everything. Coming directly from the Pixel 8 Pro, I figured the differences wouldn’t be quite as pronounced, but the design changes alone feel like major improvements in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

Pixel Studio is another exclusive feature on the Pixel 9 series. It works similarly to image generators— you simply add a text prompt, and it generates results that are mostly fun. Since I first tried it, Google has made changes to Pixel Studio. Not only does it prevent users from creating obscene images or any content with inappropriate material, but it also has guardrails to stop the generation of certain types of images. For example, I tried to create a funny take on a politician, but the app prevents the generation of images involving people.

And then, for those who aren’t dead-set on Android, there’s the iPhone 15 Pro Max ($999 at Amazon). Physically, it’s probably the phone that feels the most like the Pixel 9 Pro XL, right down to its flat sides and the placement of its antennas. Of course, you’ll have to accept iOS and find your way into Apple’s walled garden, which can be an expensive change to make. On the bright side, Apple still has excellent optimization across its entire ecosystem, getting more out of smaller batteries and rolling out updates for as long as it wants to. But really, with Google’s seven years of updates and much-improved battery life, is that much of a selling point over the Pixel 9 Pro XL these days?

If you don't mind a bigger smartphone, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is a solid device. If you want something smaller, I’d wait for the Pixel 9 Pro. I love this handset; it feels incredibly premium inside and out. Of course, I’ve only had the device for a few weeks. The phone may inevitably have issues, and most handsets do, but if you want my current opinion on the phone to get in the market, then it’s the 9 Pro XL. But it’s worth noting that Google’s phones aren’t as cheap as they once were. The device costs $1,499 in Canada, which is more expensive than any previous Pixel smartphone. However, if we compare top-of-the-line flagships, the 9 Pro XL costs $250 less than the iPhone 15 Pro Max and $300 less than the S24 Ultra, so with the 9 Pro XL, you get superb quality for your buck.

That question is framed that way because in short – yes, I think you should strongly consider buying one of Google’s Pixel 9 Pro phones if you are in the market for something new and at the high-end. Your real decision is over which one, the small or XL variant. Rarely do I frame up a review recap in this way, but I really believe the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are the best phones you can buy today. And I’m talking between Android and iPhone: Google made the best phones of 2024. Google is leading in software on Android without overdoing it, their cameras remain at the top, and their software support is industry leading. Where the Pixel 9 Pro series further excels is in the areas that Google appears to have fixed from previous models.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL might feel like a bigger upgrade than it is because of all the talk around AI, but many of the most impressive new features such as Gemini Live are not exclusive to the Pixel and are available on most other Android phones too. This leaves us with a few smaller hardware changes. Out of those, we really like the new design and the improved battery life. We can appreciate the faster Tensor G4 chip and faster charging, but those are not quite game-changers. Is all of that enough to justify the higher price? Maybe not fully, but this Pixel is still cheaper than the iPhone Pro Max or Galaxy Ultra. If you already own a recent Pixel phone, you should not feel rushed to upgrade.

Today we are completely disassembling the Google Pixel XL to see how repairable it really is. With 7 years of updates - it would be nice if Google made the hardware repairable enough to last as long as the software. But alas... it looks like Google has not made the Pixel 9 Pro XL very repairable. The battery is near impossible to remove safely.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is designed to provide a flagship experience and it achieves that. Everything from the design & display to the performance & camera is excellent and may even beat other flagship phones at the same price. However, is it better than the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra? That would be a no. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is an excellent smartphone, which cannot be beaten by the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL except for two things, night camera performance and AI. Pixel phones always have been great at night photography and that didn’t change here.

While the new Google Pixel 9 Pro XL truly feels like a flagship with its premium and snappy performance, the overall user experience is good, if not the best. The Galaxy S24 Ultra with the built S-Pen and additional AI features, remains our top choice for productivity-focused customers. Even the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro, with an overclocked processor and inbuilt AirTriggers, is an easy recommendation for hardcore or professional mobile gamers. Perhaps, the biggest takeaway is the pricing, which Google must consider reducing to gain an edge in the market. The Pixel 9 Pro can be considered if you don’t want to spend over 1.20 lakh, though its display size is much smaller in comparison. However, if the price is not the concern and you want to experience the cleanest Android interface and be the first to try the newest Google-developed AI features on a tall screen, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is your best choice. Each year, the Pixel phones are getting better and this year is another step forward in look, feel, performance and user experience. The increased RAM and capabilities of the Tensor G4 result in a remarkably snappy performance level, even when you’re really giving your phone a hard time; and the Tensor G4 is the processing force behind Gemini on your phone and the connectivity is a home run in my book too, giving users the best of wireless with Wi-Fi 7 and 5G connectivity. If you’re not using or interested in AI then this probably isn’t the phone for you at this time… but if you’re due for an upgrade and curious about where AI is going this is a really good entry point because of the instant access to AI in your pocket.

Google got a lot right with its new Pixel 9 lineup. It stepped up the build quality and design, now easily matching what we see from Samsung. The new design, while simple, is unerringly elegant and cohesive. These phones have the same fundamental flat glass slab design as the iPhone 15, Galaxy S24, and countless other phones, but they look distinctive and "Pixel-y" at a glance. The camera bar is a bit chunky, but it's centered and stable when you set your phone down. We also appreciate how well the Pixels fit in cases, which most people use on their phones. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is the more expensive of the phones at $1,100, which is a bit harder to justify now that the Pixel 9 Pro exists, unless you need/want its larger, beautiful display and slightly better battery life.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is more than just a smartphone—it’s a comprehensive package designed for those who demand the best from their mobile devices. From its stunning Super Actua Display and top-tier camera system to its powerful AI features and robust performance, the Pixel 9 Pro XL excels in every category that matters. While the price point may be higher than other models in the Pixel lineup, the extra cost is justified by the premium features and long-term software support. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast, a power user, or someone who simply wants the best Android experience available, the Pixel 9 Pro XL delivers on all fronts. TLDR? The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is a true flagship device that sets a new standard for Android smartphones.

Do I advise you to buy the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL from $1,099? Yes. As a premium flagship, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL makes perfect sense. It has nothing to envy the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Xiaomi 14 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max in terms of design and photo quality. The update policy is excellent, and Google is leading the AI race with Gemini Live and Gemini Nano enhancements. Currently, Google's AI assistant is more useful than Apple Intelligence and Galaxy AI. Autonomy has also improved considerably since last year's Pixel 8 Pro. And best of all, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is less expensive than its rivals at launch. It's the first “AI smartphone” to have real potential in terms of utility. That could obviously change with the iPhone 16 and Apple Intelligence. But Gemini doesn't yet allow me to predict the future.

The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are the first phones to take advantage of artificial intelligence in a way that doesn’t feel trivial. Gemini is definitely still a work in progress, and while it’s not reliable enough that you’d trust it to run your business, the AI model’s rapidly evolving ability to integrate with more and more Google apps means it can respond with meaningful and useful answers. Most of the time, at least. The AI is still prone to making stuff up, only occasionally, but often enough that you’ll want to double-check its answers, which undermines the time-saving benefits of using it for many serious tasks. But look past the flashy Gemini chatbot tricks and you’ll find a fundamentally impressive piece of underlying hardware, one where artificial intelligence has been used to enable things like advanced photo editing at a touch, near-instant transcription and formatting of meeting notes, the ability to summarise phone calls and search for and recall important information from screenshots.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is totally worth it based on the battery life alone. You can comfortably leave the house with the Pixel 9 Pro XL and not suffer from battery drainage anxiety. You can get away with being lazy for a bit and not charging the phone for a night or two. Plus, when it comes to its shooters, it can compete with arguably the best smartphone on the market: the iPhone 15 Pro Max. That being said, the Pixel 9 Pro XL beats the iPhone 15 Pro Max in at least three categories: camera, display, and battery life. On top of that, the Pixel 9 Pro XL's Google AI features are a blast to use (though they have their quirks), making the Pixel 9 Pro XL one of the best phones of 2024.

With the Pixel 9 Pro XL, Google has produced its first true superphone to rival Samsung’s S24 Ultra and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. A huge and glorious screen, long battery life, standout looks and a class-leading camera make it one of the best phones you can buy. It is really big, however, requiring two-handed use most of the time, so if that’s a problem its smaller sibling the 9 Pro may be a better option. Google’s cutting-edge AI additions continue to be a mixture of fun tricks and useful tools, particularly in the camera department, with features such as Magic Editor and Add Me. Gemini Live is a most impressive new thing and meaningfully improves on AI assistants on a phone, but whether it will be worth paying a monthly fee for after the free first year remains to be seen. The increased price this year stings but the Pixel still undercuts Samsung and Apple’s rivals, and will receive seven years of software support so it should last a long time.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is a beautifully balanced experience, offering heaps of power yet superb longevity per charge in a package that's been redesigned with great consideration. Sure, the camera bump on the back is now pretty massive – but the cameras within it remain exemplary. Minor downsides can't hold this Pixel back from being one of the best Android phones – one that's different in form and function to Samsung's also-compelling Galaxy S24 Ultra. That Google also promises 7 years of software and security support, plus feature drops that'll advance its AI feature set, only means the best will continue to get better.

But the important thing is that behind all the flashy AI features, there’s a really good phone in the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pro XL. These are phones that I can finally hold up next to a Galaxy S24 Plus or an iPhone 15 Pro and think, yes, these are all top-of-the-line devices. These Pixels aren’t the budget-priced flagships that they used to be, and I think the higher prices are well justified by the hardware. Plus, when you’re getting seven years of OS updates, you can squeeze a whole lot of value out of your investment. And even as a small-phone enthusiast, the 9 Pro feels like a reasonable size to me. It’s not small, but it’s not gargantuan, either, and I deeply appreciate not having to sacrifice camera features by choosing it over the big one. Pixel image quality remains reliable, and the battery will keep up to the end of the day. Whether we’re ready or not, a new era of AI phones and photos is here, and it’s messy as hell. But the hardware — if not my faith in an AI-everything future — is solid.

Year after year, as it chases the best Google has improved the Pixel phones. Now with the Pixel 9 Pro XL I believe the company has finally produced a phone that is close to being perfect. I do wish it had a faster chipset and faster charging speed. But beyond that, there is not one area where the Pixel 9 Pro XL is, in a meaningful way, behind any other phone. And because of that Pixel 9 Pro XL deserves your attention. When it comes to expensive phones, users rightly have a preference for Apple. The iPhone is a safe and reliable choice.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is a bit of a “marmite” phone in terms of design, you either love, or hate the camera bar on the back. Personally, I quite liked the older style of design, with the bar going across the back of the phone. The new design seems to make the camera bump even larger and loses some of the style of the earlier models. The phone also feels thicker than other phones, from other brands, and the camera bump seems even bigger again. Design issues aside, which you’ll either love, hate, or feel indifferent about, there’s lots to like about the new phone, including the 7 years of updates that Google are promising. Most importantly, for photographers, Google make some great cameras, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL is packed full of them, with consistent results from each camera.

For the first time ever, Google is offering a Pixel Pro model in two sizes without compromise. That includes an incredible rear triple-camera system with 5x optical zoom telephoto camera, a bag of impressive new AI camera tricks, handy new Pixel-exclusive apps that rely on the power of Gemini, and a bold new design that some will love to hate. Unfortunately, a slower-than-ever Tensor processor and $100 price increase make this harder to recommend than I'd like, and a flaky new fingerprint sensor means finding the right screen protector is harder than it should be.

I started out this review by saying that I’ve been reviewing and using Google’s own phones for many, many years. I’ve used just about every Pixel and Nexus device minus the Nexus One, Nexus S and OG Pixel. And nearly a week after picking up these phones from Made by Google, it’s still hard to put them down. Typically by now, I would have switched to another device, or wanted to switch. But that’s not the case this year. Google really seemed to have nailed just about every aspect of the Pixel 9 Pro series this year. From the build, to the camera, to the software, and everything in between. Even the battery life has been really good, and on par with many other flagships so far this year.

So, if the Pixel 9 Pro XL is so good, why not give it a perfect 10/10?

The increasing price tags of Google's Pixel lineup is another problem in itself. Google's Pixel 9 Pro now starts at Rs. 1,09,999 while the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which we have for review, starts from Rs. 1,24,999, stacking it up against Samsung's Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra models, which offer superior hardware in some areas. We will test out all these AI features and the usual smartphone features like camera performance, heating, battery life and more. So, we recommend you stay tuned for our detailed review and make an informed purchase, as last year's Pixel 8 Pro was not too different from the previous year's Pixel 7 Pro.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL brings relatively major stylistic changes plus some hardware upgrades that do make it a better phone than the previous generation. The brighter display is a welcome improvement, of course, and it's possibly the brightest in the business, though it's not like the 8 Pro was lacking in this respect. Battery life has been a blemish for Pixels in head-to-head comparisons, and the new model is a step up in this respect, though it remains in a trailing position among its peers. The Pixel's biggest selling point lies in its AI capabilities, Google wants us to believe. A bunch of software features are at your disposal for both work and play and image editing tools can help save a photo that circumstances tried to ruin.

Check out my tips and tricks guide for a closer look at the best Google smartphone features. I've also compared the Pixel 9 Pro XL vs Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra, and my reviews of the other flagships are coming soon! While the camera hardware hasn't changed much, Google has at least thrown some new features into this blower's repertoire. This includes the helpful Add Me, improved Video Boost processing and some framing help. The Pixel 9 Pro XL also serves up Gemini Live (for a year), Screenshots and loads of excellent AI tools. Battery life is excellent, among the best of any phone in 2024. And the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL can also stand as tall as its rivals for the media chops. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is one of the most exciting Pixels in a long time and one of the best phones you can buy in 2024. It not only sports a desperately-needed design refresh, but a boost to the auxiliary camera lenses, all-day battery life and a huge focus on GenAI allows it to stand out from the competition. AI is the buzzword for 2024, with a lot more competition in the smartphone space from players like Samsung and Apple, but Google shows that it’s still king in this area by offering a holistic set of AI tools that permeate every aspect of the Pixel experience, from cameras and photo editing to interacting with Gemini, recalling information with Pixel Screenshots and much, much more.

It's still too early to call the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL the best Android phone this year, but it's certainly up there for consideration -- even with its AI blunders. While the new model is Google's most expensive non-foldable phone yet, the price bump is justified by improvements in aspects that traditionally held the Pixel line back, such as charging speed, performance, and build quality. With the reintroduction of an XL model this year, the smaller Pixel 9 Pro should appeal to users who want a more comfortable device without compromising on specs and camera hardware. And if both phones are out of your budget, but you want the core features, consider the cheaper Pixel 9.

Arriving just ten months after the previous Pixel generation, there was a danger the Pixel 9 Pro XL wouldn’t feel like a significant upgrade. Good news, Google fans: this phone is every bit the flagship. The brighter display is a stunner, real world performance is suitably top-tier, and the sharpened styling is up there with anything from the Apple or Samsung stables. Battery life is more than respectable, the boost to charging speeds is very welcome, and Gemini continues to get smarter in actually useful ways. The rear cameras continue to take fantastic photos in all lighting conditions, and the AI editing tools are up there with the best. If this was the only flavour of Pro Pixel, it would be a no-brainer.

On average, I never felt as though the Pixel 9 Pro XL was running any warmer than my Galaxy Z Fold 6 has been, despite the Samsung device running atop a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip from Qualcomm. Of course, a foldable is always going to run way hotter anyway due to the nature of its thin design, but I think Google has made some genuine improvements this year. We’re not going to dive into benchmarks here – Google doesn’t care about winning those anyway – but a week in, I think we’re set for a good year for Tensor. The second one in a row, unbelievably. There’s more on the horizon for Tensor, but as far as a stop-gap goes, Tensor G4 seems promising to say the least. That’s all for now from me on the Pixel 9 Pro XL, though.

There's certainly a lot to like about the Pixel 9 Pro XL. I love the new design, the new AI skills are at least great fun to play around with. And while the cameras aren't much of a step up over the last model, the phone can take great photos in daytime outdoor conditions. The Pixel's image generation and conversational Gemini Live are the main things setting the phones apart from the competition right now, and if those features leave you cold then you can probably look elsewhere. That said, AI will only become more a part of all phones with Samsung expanding its Galaxy AI across its phone line and Apple launching Apple Intelligence for its newer iPhones. So whether you want AI on your phone or not will soon be a moot point -- you'll simply have to have it. And the Pixel 9 Pro's combination of great design, slick software and solid cameras definitely make it a great handset to get your first true taste of AI on your phone.

I won’t know for sure until I test and review the Google Pixel 9 Pro but my first instinct is that the smaller handset is going to be the better value of the pair. The battery may be bigger on the XL but the screen is too, so it’s not a given that stamina achieved here won’t be matched by the smaller handset. Aside from the compact build and smaller screen, the regular Pixel 9 Pro offers everything else covered here, and does so for £100 less. Don’t get me wrong, this is still an outstanding smartphone, with the brightest screen I’ve ever tested, phenomenal cameras and far better battery life than last year. If it wasn’t for the big price increase, this would be a five-star review but, as it stands, stepping right up to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra was a mistake.

Gemini AI adds fun parlor tricks like generative AI, screenshot cataloging, and photography tools. Though some of these features lack polish, they are far ahead of what any other phone offers, so if you want a high-end handset to dive head-first into AI, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is for you. Clearly there are improvements with the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Apart from its brighter display and longer battery life, everything else about the Pixel 9 Pro XL feels like it’s a modest upgrade at best — which is made tougher due to its $100 price increase. While the new AI features are helpful, I was hoping for bigger improvements around its camera and processing performance. Given that the Pixel 9 Pro has the same exact camera arrangement as this, there isn’t much justification on picking the Pixel 9 Pro XL for photography. The google pixel 9 XL has quite possibly the worlds largest camera bump. Its not even a bump at this point - its a plateau. And that’s my big problem: while it can be painted as consumer-friendly and expanding the level of choice, this splitting of the Pixel Pro into two handsets, to me, feels like subterfuge. The Pixel 9 Pro XL, which despite the new suffix is still very much the direct follow-up to last year’s Pixel 8 Pro, is more expensive than its predecessor, while the Pixel 9 Pro starts at the same price but has lower specs. Together, they produce an illusion of continuity but in reality, one charges the same for less and the other asks more for the same. Needless to say, this messy pricing structure hasn’t made the best first impression with me but that doesn’t mean that my mind is made up about the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. It doesn’t look as good as the rest of the Pixel camera systems, but I don’t hate it either. I think they’re laid out like this so you can use the lenses at a better angle when using the camera in a folded state of the phone, similar to Samsung’s Flex Mode. Overall, this is the device I’m most excited about testing because, on the surface, it shows little compromise over choosing the regular Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL.

In truth, the only question you should ask yourself when choosing the Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL is whether you want a larger or more compact device. The only differences between these phones are the size of the screen, battery capacity, charging speeds (as a result of the different battery sizes) and, above all, the price. So, if money isn’t a major factor and you prefer larger phones, get the new Pixel 9 Pro XL. But if you value a more compact phone or just want to save a bit of cash, you won’t miss out on much with the regular Pixel 9 Pro.

So, the good news is that it doesn't sound like there will be a massive chasm between the three Pixel 9 models. Much like with previous years buyers will get most of the good stuff even if they opt for the regular Pixel 9. Essentially, at least from the picture that leaks and reports have help us build, Google is using the new Pixel 9 Pro to fill in the gap that existed between the Pro and non-Pro Pixels from previous years. Now you won't have to pay $300 to jump to the more premium device, as long as you are okay with a smaller one.

ARM Mali-G715 MP7:
