En changeant de recette, Google réussit à proposer l’un des smartphones pliants les plus réussis du marché. S’il n’atteint pas les records de finesse et de légèreté du Honor Magic V3, son nouveau format reste agréable à utiliser au quotidien, aussi bien en smartphone qu’en tablette. Meilleur photophone de sa catégorie, il se distingue aussi par l’interface Pixel Experience dopée à l’IA, ses magnifiques écrans ainsi que sa bonne autonomie. Au regard de son prix stratosphérique, on aurait tout de même aimé un peu plus de générosité sur certains aspects. La recharge est vraiment trop lente en 2024 pour un modèle de ce calibre, les optimisations logicielles pour le format pliant pourraient être plus nombreuses et les performances brutes de la puce Tensor G4 interrogent sur la durabilité du produit.

Si Google n’en est pas à son coup d’essai en matière de smartphone pliant, le Pixel 9 Pro Fold est le premier à être officiellement lancé en France. Et le fabricant ne se débrouille pas mal du tout ! Très bien présenté, et jouissant des mêmes atouts photographiques que ses cousins les Pixel 9 et Pixel 9 Pro, ce modèle à charnière est hélas assez moyen avec son écran OLED à la luminosité assez limitée. Reste que les couleurs sont superbement mises en valeur, et que la directivité de cette dalle de 8″ n’est pas un débat. Côté performances, la puce Tensor G4 est capable du meilleur, sauf sur les jeux les plus gourmands où elle montre davantage ses limites.

Le Pixel 9 Pro Fold est le premier smartphone pliant réussi par Google. Mais cela ne veut pas dire qu'il est parfait. La plus grande réussite de Google est sans aucun doute d'être parvenu à en faire un Pixel, mais qui se plie. Entendons par là qu'il hérite autant des avantages que des défauts. Sans doute intéressera-t-il d'ailleurs en premier lieu des personnes déjà convaincues par les Google Pixel ? Pour le positif dont il hérite, il profite lui aussi d'un écran très (très) lumineux, de 7 ans de suivi logiciel, d'une interface très agréable et fourmille de fonctionnalités et de la patte Pixel en photo. Côté négatif, il récupère une autonomie juste moyenne, une puce loin des sommets de la performance et la petite frustration de ne pas avoir les mêmes fonctionnalités que les USA.

On l’a dit un peu plus haut, la première chose à laquelle on pense quand on découvre le Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, c’est le fait que cela nous fait penser énormément au OnePlus Open et c’est plus qu’un compliment dans la mesure ou le smartphone de OnePlus était réussi. Avec son écran externe de 6,3 pouces, le Pixel 9 Pro Fold, replié, peut déjà se résumer à un Pixel 9 Pro dans son usage et ses dimensions. La seule différence vient finalement surtout du bloc photo qui est très bien mais reste un cran en dessous du Pixel 9 Pro quand il s’agit d’utiliser l’ultra grand-angle ou le téléphoto. Une fois déplié, c’est une mini tablette carré et c’est tout le confort qui va avec.

Les performances semblent au rendez-vous grâce à la puce Tensor G4 et aux 16 Go de RAM, même s’il faudra attendre un test complet pour en juger pleinement. Les nouvelles fonctionnalités d’IA promettent d’enrichir l’expérience utilisateur. Mais pareil, le test complet permettra de vraiment tester ça. Le principal bémol concerne la partie photo. Si les améliorations sont certainement notables par rapport au Pixel Fold original, on peut regretter que Google n’ait pas équipé son modèle le plus haut de gamme des mêmes capteurs que les Pixel 9 Pro et Pro XL. À ce sujet, j’ai des sentiments mitigés. Les clichés que j’ai pu prendre sont de bonne qualité, mais je ne peux m’empêcher de penser que pour ce prix, j’aurais aimé avoir les mêmes capteurs que sur les Pixel 9 Pro et Pro XL.

During my review, I mentioned that there could be some screen bleeding issues. Honestly, I haven’t been able to replicate them, so it could have been a user error. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is perfect for someone who wants the best folding phone on the Canadian market. These people tend to be power users who like to work from their handsets.

Coming from someone who has never been the biggest fan of foldables, I think the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is without a doubt a device to consider buying. And that 8-inch tablet is a good tablet that showcases the major strides Google has made with Android for bigger screens, making way for simple multitasking, consuming media, editing photos, and doing anything that may require (or look better) on a larger display.

Foldable phones, especially those that fold out into tablets, are complicated feats of engineering, and maybe that means they won’t ever get cheaper. And in that case, most people won’t even consider buying one.

And I get it: that’s why that screen is there. But if I’m going to continually be using the (very usable) outer display, what is the point of carrying around this mini tablet all the time at this $1799 price point? For me, I couldn’t quite get there, and I’ll be finishing the last part of my review process with my SIM card back in the Pixel 9 Pro XL. It does make me wonder if this is exactly why Samsung has stuck with the ultra-narrow outer display for so long. With that phone, it wasn’t exactly comfortable to hold with one hand while reclined, but it was 100% doable. And when I wanted a bit more width to the screen, I could just rotate it. Having a true portrait and landscape view is a good thing with many apps, and after all the hate and ridicule Samsung gets for staying with that form factor for a 6th edition, I’m starting to think they might be onto something.

Still, there are compromises, including its hefty weight and camera specs that lag behind the top-tier Pixel 9 Pro series. Does the Pixel 9 Pro Fold still snap excellent photos? Definitely. But they aren't as good as what the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are capable of taking. It’s a truly outstanding tool for productivity, and is delightfully versatile for entertainment. I can’t, in good conscience, recommend someone spends approaching three grand on a phone. But if you can pick one up closer to two during sales, that’s something I honestly believe is pretty good value.

The iPad Pro 2024 is an exceptional tablet. Its vivid OLED display is a marvel to behold and the new thin and light design makes it more portable than ever. I’m also a fan of its speedy M4-powered performance and astonishing battery life. Sure, its peripherals are expensive, but as a device, the iPad Pro has everything you could ever want from a tablet. The only loose thread is the iPad Pro’s AI capabilities. This has been a sticking point for me whenever I review an “AI” computer since there just aren’t many applications that take advantage of a chip's NPU (Neural Processing Unit) in any appreciable way. Apple says the M4 and its onboard Neural Engine NPU is an “absolute powerhouse for AI,” but I’ve yet to see that in the beta for iPadOS 18. Even if the iPad Pro never becomes an "AI powerhouse," it’s still an incredible tablet for people who want a powerful slate with a gorgeous OLED display. The iPad Pro has set a standard for all premium tablets to follow.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold renders the original Fold a prototype at best. The aspect ratio that didn't work for some popular apps like Instagram, too-large black bezel around the main screen (all to accommodate the selfie camera), and the phone's inability to lie completely flat when unfolded are mercifully gone. Google's new Fold is taller, much thinner, and noticeably lighter than its first attempt. There are certainly reasons to be concerned about Google’s second-generation folding phone, not least the lack of hardware upgrade when it comes to the cameras. However, Google appears to have improved the Fold where it needed to be improved. It’s tougher and slimmer than before with a larger inner display. It’s packed with new AI features, including improvements to the HDR capture, which should boost image quality even if the hardware can’t. If these can combine with the new Tensor G4 chip to boost performance and battery life, Google might have a contender on its hands. If only the price was a little lower.

ARM Mali-G715 MP7:

L'ARM Immortalis-G715MC11 est une carte graphique haut de gamme intégrée pour smartphone dotée de 11 des 16 cœurs possibles. Il est basé sur la troisième génération de l'architecture Valhall d'ARM et offre des performances 15 % supérieures à celles de la génération précédente. Le G715 est le premier GPU mobile prenant en charge le traçage matériel des rayons et prenant également en charge le variable rate shading (VRS).

Ces cartes devraient être capables de faire tourner tout les jeux d'aujourd'hui, mais la plupart d'entre eux uniquement en détails moyens ou faibles et avec des résolution basses. Les plus vieux jeux ou les jeux moins gourmands restent jouables avec de beaux graphismes.
