At a $399-base price, the Pixel 3a is a promising alternative to it flagship brother. The overall usage experience remains the same though certain feature have been removed. There's no wireless charging and water resistance, and some security features weren't included to further bring down the price. If you're will to spend an additional $400, then the Pixel 3 is a logical choice. But if you're ok with a toned-down version, without too much of a compromise, the Pixel 3a is a rather good, if not, best choice.

The Pixel 3a is a steal for those who simply don't want to spend a lot on their next phone and still get a great camera. The specs are decent for the $399/£399 price, and you don't have to deal with the usual carrier bloatware that you'll typically find on other midrange phones.

This is the phone that should work for everyone. The Google Pixel line has long been called one of the greatest Android experiences on the market. Now, the search giant has a phone that is much more accessible for a larger portion of the market. For $399 (or less), you get the best features from the Pixel 3: camera quality and consistent Android updates. No phone in the Pixel 3a’s class comes close to capturing as nice of photos or matching its update schedule. There are some trade-offs, though, by going the budget-friendly route. You don’t get waterproofing, wireless charging, or premium glass, but you do still get a solid all-around package. As a bonus, it comes with a headphone jack. Google has finally made a phone that includes almost every feature that makes the Pixel lineup so popular in a budget-conscious package. Toss in the fact that virtually every carrier (other than AT&T) will sell the phone in their stores, and this phone should be an instant success.

Despite an exceptional camera and a handful of useful software tricks, the Pixel 4 and 4 XL didn't blow us away this year. That's because the phone has an average battery life that rivals easily outlast, it has limited storage, and other phones have excellent cameras with their own impressive low-light modes (like the iPhone 11 and OnePlus 7T).

The Pixel 3a is a great mid-range option for those who want a Pixel but can't afford the real deal. There might be more powerful and flashy phones at this price but Google offers something different. You get the design and key features of its flagship phone and put them into an affordable handset with a few downgrades that are understandable like no waterproofing or wireless charging.

If you made it this far in the review, congrats. It’ll all be in the final exam. The Pixel 4 devices are now hitting store shelves with intriguing new hardware and advanced facial recognition that replaces the traditional fingerprint scanner. It kind of follows Apple’s Face ID footsteps, but things must evolve. The starting price is $799, while a new Pixel 3a with the same general experience sells for only $399. You’re also getting a 3.5mm headphone jack and rear fingerprint scanner, both of which are absent on Google’s latest. The larger Pixel 3a XL is less than a hundred dollars more at $479. There are amazing phones out there like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and OnePlus 7 Pro, but pound for pound (as they say in boxing), the Pixel 3a is the Android phone of the year.

With a slew of attractive mid-range devices now available in the competitive smartphone market, there’s pressure on the big players to provide more affordable options. As such, Google, Apple, and Samsung all now have more budget-oriented versions of their flagship devices available to help keep customers loyal. In the case of the Google Pixel 3a, the most significant difference is its cheaper chipset, so it’s not as powerful as the flagship Pixel 3.

The Google Pixel 3a makes a strong case for tossing out the spec sheet. On paper, it looks like yet another boring budget smartphone, with a middling processor, single front and rear cameras, and a bare-minimum 1080p screen. But in your pocket, you might just mistake it for a premium phone.

If you’re a hardcore Google fan then you’ll no doubt want to wait for the Pixel 4, but everyone else should seriously consider this budget offering – especially if the notion of splashing £800 on a phone fills you with dread. In summary, Google has packed these phones with slower processors and cut back on some of the premium materials used in the Google Pixel 3 flagships launched last October. Google Pixel 3a is a little miracle. Somehow, the Pixel 3's gobsmacking camera has made the transition to a phone that's almost half the price. If you've always fancied getting your hands on that unbelievable camera, but didn't like the idea of coughing up £739, stop reading and buy a Pixel 3a right now. For everyone else, know that there are some compromises with this £399 Pixel: the plastic body isn't amazing, the lack of water resistance means you'll have to be more careful, and the ability to shoot ultra-wide selfie shots is sorely missed. But whether you're willing to pay twice as much to get those features on the flagship Pixel is your call.

In fact, my only gripe with the Pixel 3 involves its price. At $799, it's $150 more expensive at launch than the Pixel 2 was, even though the new phone packs the same 64GB of storage. And so much of what makes this device great pertains to software, not strictly hardware. Slight price hikes are expected, but you get the sneaking suspicion Google jacked up the cost just because Apple proved it could get away with upping prices first.

If your budget is anywhere from $300 to $500, it’s probably the phone to beat. If your budget is higher, like in the $700+ range, you should probably buy a phone in that range, like a OnePlus 7 Pro, Galaxy S10, or Pixel 3. The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are not better than any of those phones, but they are still excellent for the price. With the 3a and 3a XL, you get a really good camera, software experience that won’t get in your way, software updates that others won’t see for months, and a non-fragile plastic body that’ll relieve some stress from your life. The Google Pixel 3a is a new midrange contender that excels in many areas. be it the pure Android experience, an excellent 12.2 MP camera that puts its triple-camera rivals to shame, and an impressive OLED display with support for HDR. In addition to that, you get the unlimited Google Photos storage, Google Playground AR, and stereo speakers. Unfortunately, the Pixel 3a also receives some of the criticisms came from its bigger siblings, you don’t get a dual-SIM functionality, no microSD card support and no 3.5mm audio jack. Not only that, but the Pixel 3a also carries large display bezels and plastic casing design in a segment where you can easily get better-looking design and full-screen display options.

Flagship phones aren’t going away. Yet at a time when even early-adopters are having second thoughts about $1k+ handsets, it feels like we’ve finally turned a corner in the midrange. Having to compromise in order to spend half what you might on a modern-day flagship phone doesn’t surprise me. What does is just how impressive the Pixel 3a still feels, even after Google’s cost-cutting. Assuming you agree with its decisions, there’s a deeply compelling argument here about what’s “good enough” for most users.

The Google Pixel 3a is a phenomenal bargain at $399 (and $479 for the XL model). You’re getting so much for your money, including that brilliant camera and an amazing software experience. Sure the device has some flaws, like the somewhat cheap plastic build quality (when other devices in this class use flagship-grade metal and glass) and a lower end processor than we’d like. However, the pros far outweigh the cons. If you’re looking for a great phone that doesn’t break the bank, this may be your best choice. In fact, you just might be persuaded to take the Pixel 3a and its amazing camera over a flagship smartphone like the OnePlus 7 Pro or even the Samsung Galaxy S10+. While the threshold for “inexpensive” depends on the thickness of one’s wallet, Google’s Pixel 3a is worth every penny, especially when compared to the competition. You’ll definitely find cheaper devices running Android, many of which have equally large and garishly bright displays, or boast similar internal specs like RAM or storage space. But none can hold a candle to what the Pixel 3a offers: an up-to-date operating system that keeps users at the forefront of Android’s latest developments, a quality camera that can conquer darkness, and a price point less likely to break the bank.

Android power users should still be tempted to still look for the original Pixel 3 XL at clearance or second-hand prices, because of the faster chipset, the possibility of 128GB storage, the more balanced speakers, the Qi charging and the official waterproofing, and damn the notch! For the mainstream, to get Google’s software and updates along with that camera system at half the cost of many flagships, means that the Pixel 3a XL should do very well indeed. If you want a more compact feel in the hand and lower price then go for the smaller ‘3a’, but the 3a XL definitely has its own place in the Pixel Continuum.

For those who look at the specs on paper, there are better options available: OnePlus 7 and Zenfone 6 for starters. A lot of buyers will think that if the Pixel 3a was just around the Rs 30,000 mark then it would have been an absolute steal. We would tend to agree with that. No doubt the Pixel 3a is a very good phone but it is a wee bit expensive as a whole package. The Pixel 3a and 3a XL are not here to replace our beloved $800 – 1000 flagships; they are not even competitors to the OnePlus phones. But they are, indeed, great options if you're on the lookout for a more affordable smartphone with great camera performance and clean Android.

The Google Pixel 3a doesn’t feel like the affordable cousin of a high-end phone – it feels more like a powerful and impressive mid-range handset in its own right, with great specs and useful features inherited from the Pixel 3 that you won’t find in many other similarly-priced devices.

If you can live without things like wireless charging, water resistance and the ability to take photos of the moon, there are almost zero reasons to look and buying anything other than the Pixel 3a.

The Pixel 3a is more compact and a little easier to handle, but the Pixel 3a XL offers better battery life than its smaller sibling, making it a very tempting option. If you are interested in the Pixel 3a XL or Pixel 3a, you'll get a great experience, but we would recommend that you wait for a sale to pick either one up at a better price.

The Pixel 3a is an excellent phone for Android enthusiasts or for anyone who just needs the best mid-range camera phone. Or maybe even for anyone who’s looking for a compact yet premium phone experience. Single SIM functionality and average gaming performance aren’t traits that could deter regular consumers. If you ask us, we quite enjoyed our time with the 3a. Having said that, the Pixel 3a would have made much more sense for its US Price. Overall, if you are looking for a reliable mid-range camera smartphone which takes great images in almost any light condition than Pixel 3a is a good option.

Google is trying its hand at something new. Its signature phone, the Pixel, is jumping into the midrange market with the Pixel 3A and 3A XL. At $399 and $479 (£399 and £469 in the UK, and AU$649 and AU$799 in Australia), the handsets are essentially reworked Pixel 3 ($749 at Walmart) phones. They have the same rear camera and overall look, but there are a few hardware downgrades that contribute to the lower price.

Pixel 3a is Google’s affordable offering emphasizing its flagship camera with a trade-off with the premium design and top-notch specs. Even though the design aesthetics, as well as, the performance has been degraded on the phone, the good thing is that Google has preserved the camera and its features to make sure you get Pixel camera experience. If you have seen the Pixel 3 camera already, this will deliver you pretty much the same camera features surprisingly with its cutting-edge photo quality.

Google Pixel 3a is a little miracle. Somehow, the Pixel 3's gobsmacking camera has made the transition to a phone that's almost half the price. If you've always fancied getting your hands on that unbelievable camera, but didn't fancy coughing up £739, stop reading and buy a Pixel 3a right now. For everyone else, know that there are some compromises with this £399 Pixel: the plastic body doesn't feel as premium, the lack of water resistance means you'll have to be more careful, and the ability to shoot ultra-wide selfie shots is sorely missed. Whether you're willing to pay twice as much to get those features on the flagship Pixel is your call.

It’s somewhat amazing how well the Pixel 3a (and 3a XL) have been received by the tech media, given that these two handsets have been massively leaked for many months now. Much of the praise – as here, with me – has to come down to the Nexus-era price points. This is where Pixels should be in order to get Google’s vision of Android and guaranteed updates out to as many people as possible. That Google hasn’t had to sacrifice too much in terms of hardware in order to get here is to its credit and everyone’s benefit.

The essence of Google is still not a hardware company, which can be said to be reflected in the introduction of AI and Pixel 3a at the I/O conference last night. For the use and polishing of hardware, Pixel 3a still has a certain gap with the main mainstream level. But Google never needs too much hardware stacking, and only through software optimization, algorithms can make up for these defects, and even bring a better experience.

The Pixel 3a doesn’t quite bring back the pure bargain-basement pricing structure of the brand’s once-fabled Nexus series. However, it does lower the barrier of entry for anyone wanting a fantastic camera on a smartphone.

In fact, the more I use the Pixel 3a, the less I think I would recommend the Pixel 3 over it. Even taking into account the Pixel 3's frequent price drops, the Pixel 3a offers, in essence, the same experience as the Pixel 3 at a much more accessible price point.

Sure, the phone world has largely moved on to skinny screens and multi-lens cameras. You don't get any of that here. The vanilla Pixel 3 has also been out long enough now that there's not a massive gulf in price between the two, so the 3a isn't an outright bargain.

The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are available to order from Google’s own online store, as well as T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless. There are three colors to pick from: Just Black, Clearly White, and Purple-ish. Overall, Google deserves a hat tip for making its affordable smartphones available from so many retailers.

The Pixel 3a is an absolutely phenomenal device, not only surpassing Google's previous efforts, but also giving the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S10 a run for their money. If you’re looking for an outstanding phone that isn't going to blow a hole in your budget, this is what you’ve been waiting for.

But I do know this: I have been waiting for Google to make this exact phone for something like five years. Google used to make phones that were ridiculously good for the price. 2013’s $349 Nexus 5 is still the pinnacle of an inexpensive, excellent phone. Since then, prices across the industry have gone up, up, and up again. So I am glad Google is getting back to those roots. This is the kind of phone Google should be making: something really good and really affordable.

The Pixel 3a provides that Google design, physically but also in software which is important when it comes to the camera. Of course, there are downsides such as a lower grade processor, lack of waterproofing and no wireless charging but these a necessary to achieve a lower price point.

There are, then, some fairly significant differences between the Pixel 3a XL and Pixel 3 XL. Depending on your priorities, and budget of course, you might well be happy with the trade-offs and consider the 3a XL to be a better-value phone. But if you’d prefer the security of the 3 XL’s water resistance, the convenience of wireless charging and the power of the faster processor, you may be happy to spend the extra on the 3 XL.

The Pixel 3a is a great new option in Google’s range which lets you have a phone that’s almost as good as the Pixel 3 for considerably less. That phone is available for a lot less than Google’s price if you look elsewhere, though, and it can be well worth splashing out the extra £89/$99 or so if you value waterproofing, wireless charging and better performance. But conversely, if those features will make no difference to you, you’re better off with the Pixel 3a.

Commentaire
Qualcomm Adreno 616:
