Critiques pour le/la Dell Inspiron 14z (N411z)
Extraordinaire.

The Inspiron 14z lives up to its promise as an obtainable thin-and-light. It ticks off the three check-boxes that concern buyers looking for a portable laptop in this price range. It’s fast, it has good battery life, and it’s affordable. Of course, this laptop isn’t hurt by the fact that is has a great keyboard and solid design.

If you're not interested in games, the Dell Inspiron 14z is powerful enough for all your daily computing needs—even with power-hungry programs like video encoding and 3D modelling. It's a well-finished laptop with an excellent battery life and three USB ports—that's one more than Dell XPS 14z, we'll have you know!

At $749, our Core i5 equipped unit is a bit expensive, but the $599 Core i3 basic model (which still comes with a 6-cell battery, but not with the backlit keyboard) is a bargain and, if it were my money, would be the one to buy. In most situations the performance gap won’t be noticeable, and the fundamentally good battery life and pleasurable chassis remains the same. No matter what hardware you pick, however, the Dell Inspiron 14z should prove to be a solid, quick laptop that’s more than capable of handling anything besides demanding 3D games.

We've picked faults with Dell's Inspiron 14z - and hey, some faults are hard to miss - but it's worth reminding readers that the laptop does a lot of things well. Where there's good, there's bad, but the positives far outweigh the negatives, and the trackpad buttons are arguably the only real deal-breaker - we strongly recommend that you try before you buy, as their mushy responsive is very much an acquired taste.

We were hoping the Inspiron 14z was at worst the cheaper and chunkier sibling of Dell’s premium XPS 14z, but it wasn’t to be. Its partially metal finish is a cut above, its keyboard and touchpad are nice, and it offers reasonable battery life and value. However its screen is several rungs below average, its connections are awkward to access, it lacks dedicated graphics, and all told it simply offers little over its competition.

What happens when you look at the low to mid-range of consumer laptops is that these units end up with something of an identity crisis. They cheap out on certain aspects to keep the price low, but they spec up in other regards to improve performance and a level of quality. And that’s precisely what happens with the Dell Inspiron 14z.

Dell has produced a smart budget machine with the refreshed Inspiron. It's true that the laptop relies on integrated graphics, which means its power isn't everything when it comes to gaming. That said, the 14z is a good all-rounder that's well built and comes with a decent spec for the price.

Dell brings a very compact thin and light laptop that offers some solid features with the Inspiron 14z. This includes a very large hard drive and DVD burner in a very thin profile. Battery life is also one of the best among Windows based laptops. There are a number of annoyances that prevent it from being a superb 14-inch laptop though.

In some ways, the 14z feels rough around the edges: while Dell was whittling the chassis, it forgot to fine-tune the multitouch trackpad and make sure the touch buttons were easy to press. And unfortunately, the intrusive bloatware load didn't even get a makeover. Still, the 14z redeems itself with fast performance, long battery life and an improved (though hardly perfect) design.

Without a dedicated graphics card, current games are not playable, unless at medium or low resolution, so hunt around for games from a couple of years back to add an extra dimension to your mobile computing. Our standard absolute flogging battery test wiped out the 14z after an hour, but luckily moderate use – surfing the net without too much HD video, document editing, tweaking a photo or two – gave a healthy seven and a half hours, very decent for a mid-ranger.

The Dell Inspiron 14z (i14z-6677DBK) has plenty in common with its Editors' Choice predecessor, the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5), like the latest Core i5 processor, a larger hard drive, and slightly better performance in gaming and multimedia, but it also retains some of its flaws, like stubborn mouse buttons and a irritating port covers. It makes a strong showing in its category, but other laptops like the Sony VAIO VPC-EG16FM add features like Blu-ray and WiMAX and cost less. For the time being, the previous Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) remains our Editors' Choice.

The Dell Inspiron 14z isn't part of the peacock crowd that flaunt themselves with bright designs but rather offers a sleek, aluminium design packed with decent specs. The Dell Inspiron 14z offers decent performance in an attractive and sturdy aluminium body. It has a few annoyances, but it's a good choice for computing on the move.

We liked the Inspiron 14z at $829, but the $599 version is an even better choice for bargain hunters. While you give up some performance, you get an hour more of battery life in return. The aluminum chassis is stylish, and it's worth the extra $54 to spring for the Fire Red chassis and backlit keyboard. We're just not fans of the port covers or the way the laptop's touchpad handles some multitouch gestures. Other than those minor issues, the Dell Inspiron 14z is a very good value.

Overall, the Inspiron 14z is a light, attractive laptop that's easy to lug around and offers good performance for its sale price. However, strange ergonomic choices make this a less than an ideal unit, particularly if you're a touch-typist.

The Dell Inspiron 14z thins down the bulky look of the average Inspiron laptop while sacrificing none of the performance or battery life, adding up to an affordable mainstream notebook that's an excellent late consideration for back-to-school shopping. When it comes to laptops in 2011, "thinner is better" seems to be a consistent trend.

The Dell Inspiron 14z 2011 model update turns out to be a mixed bag. While it has a lot going for it in terms of interesting design, nice build quality, great blend of ports and new technologies, it also has a couple of big gotchas. The touchpad implementation is really pretty bad, making for a frustrating user experience. The amount of fan noise the N411z produced was also a major annoyance during testing. Both of those problems might be able to get resolved with some driver updates though, I literally purchased this laptop the day it came out and it tends to be the case the early adopters are the ones that get to experience the buggy drivers that are soon updated. Those cons aside, if you want a 14-inch laptop with great battery life of up to 6 hours, thin profile and quality aluminum case build, nice bright screen and a price starting just under $600 then the new Inspiron N411z update to the Inspiron 14z is an option worth considering and comparing to some other 14-inch laptops out there.

Taking into consideration all of the Inspiron 14z's features, its more than decent performance, its relatively small body (and also a smaller than usual power adapter) and its sub-2kg weight, it's a laptop that is very enticing. It's no MacBook Air, but we'd recommend it to anyone after a small and mobile laptop for everyday office, Web and multimedia tasks.

Intel HD Graphics 3000:
