The Asus Zenfone 8 has nailed its particular niche: a small Android phone with top specs and a reasonable price. If that’s what you want, then look no further. But if you are searching for better camera or battery endurance, then you might want to consider an alternative such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE.

As a whole, the ZenFone 8 is a great phone facing greater competition. It’s also both a good and unique smartphone because of its compact size, worthy features, and palatable price, even if it’s not particularly flashy in any aspect. We welcome having more options in Singapore’s flagship Android space and finally, we can recommend a capable, high-end compact Android phone that's not from Samsung. The trickier question then is should you choose the ASUS ZenFone 8 or the Samsung Galaxy S21 when hunting for a compact flagship phone? As iterated earlier, the Galaxy S21 has the upper hand in non-stock Android UI experience all through its operating system, a better camera system with its dedicated telephoto lens and a more capable, advanced and yet user-friendly camera interface, wireless charging and a more polished phone design as a whole. Where the ZenFone 8 gets the nod is its overall performance, much better battery life and being a tad more affordable. So it's a matter of which set of experiences do you want more out of your device.

Asus’s “big on performance, compact in size” phone isn’t that big on audio performance: If you’re looking for a masterful audio phone in the same price range, other models, such as the Black Shark 4 Pro, would make a far better choice. If its non-audio features are your priority, know that the Zenfone 8’s speakers deliver decent in-game audio and good playback at softer volumes, along with fairly good sound attributes in videos filmed with the rear cameras.

At $629, the Asus Zenfone 8 is not only a worthy alternative to the iPhone 12, it's a high-value Android flagship that's actually easy to hold. It has the same power as its full-sized competitors, a crisp OLED display, spectacular cameras, and a durable build. What's missing? Support for Verizon customers, mmWave, and wireless charging. If these omissions take the Zenfone 8 out of the running for you, we still have a few options for you. For shoppers who want a flagship with the latest-and-greatest hardware, the Samsung Galaxy S21 is a solid choice that's just a little larger. If you simply care about a phone that will serve you well over the next several years but won't break the bank, the Google Pixel 5a (our Editors' Choice among midrange phones) fits the bill perfectly.

The Asus ZenFone 8 offers a crisp display, flagship performance and a great camera set-up, all for an extremely competitive price - managing to outpace its sister phone, the ZenFone 8 Flip. The smaller design is a solid option for those who don’t want to settle for a big phone. The battery life isn't great, but providing you’re happy to use it in durable mode and can savour that 120Hz display, you can make it last through the day. Overall, this is a contender in the smartphone market for 2021.

In my opinion, it only lacked a camera with a telephoto lens and inductive charging. Everything else - is in line with my expectations for the flagship smartphone from 2021. Asus ZenFone 8 offers top performance, complete equipment and a great display. It even has a minijack and a waterproof casing, and it also takes good photos and videos. Battery - also nothing to complain about. Will you say that other flagships offer similar possibilities, and Zenfone does not stand out with anything special? And which phone can be completely covered with a palm ?! Yes, you can complain about little things - but the whole thing is really extraordinary. Fact - mainly due to the compact dimensions. But apparently size does count...?

Launched in May 2021, the Asus Zenfone 8 is one of the currently most compact flagship-level smartphones. But don’t let the small package fool you. The Asus comes with top-end hardware, including a 5.9-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 2400-pixel resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate, as well as Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line 888 chipset. In the imaging department, the Zenfone 8 features a dual-camera setup. The primary shooter uses a 64 MP Sony sensor with Quad-Bayer technology and is optically stabilized. The ultra-wide camera widens the field of view to match that of a lens with 14.3 mm (35 mm-equivalent) focal length. You can record up to 8K footage at 24 frames per second in video mode. Let’s see how the Asus Zenfone 8 fared in our DXOMARK Camera tests.

The display of Asus Zenfone 8 is vibrant and flagship-like although lags are a bit behind ROG 5. It goes without saying, the phone has an overall compact form factor which makes a lot of sense for those who want a powerful phone in a compact. On the contrary, you can just let it go if you don’t want a phone with a smaller size. The battery falls in the average size considering the battery size in the Android sphere. The charging speed is considerably slower than any flagship phone except Apple and Samsung.

There is no denying that Asus has packed as much hardware as it could into a small and ergonomic box. Sure, some of the myriad software features are underbaked, overwhelming, or even bothersome sometimes — warnings about app power consumption are a prime example. Perhaps some of that cruft should be cut out, but it's easily ignored or turned off. When you settle into the Zenfone 8, the end result is a fluid experience with plenty of utility and lots of lasting power to boot.

Whether you should buy the Asus Zenfone 8 phone or not apparently depends on your needs. Remember that you are spending a considerable amount of money. So it would be better if you get most things on a smartphone. With that budget, the company could take care of the battery features as well. This battery will often upset you because of its low capacity and there is no wireless charging support. But, you won’t see many phones compared to this one if you’re looking for alternatives. It has a brilliant processor, camera and screen specs that you can’t miss. You can still check out the OnePlus 9 5G, but you also need to commit to some important features.

The ZenFone 8 fills a void in the Android market for a full-specced, small-sized device. The Google Pixel 4A is around the same size, but it’s decidedly a budget device with a step-down processor, plastic chassis, and fewer niceties like an IP rating or a fast-refresh screen. Aside from battery life, which is manageable, you give up very little in the way of flagship features to get the ZenFone 8’s small form factor. All that said, the ZenFone 8 will be the right fit for a specific type of person, and I can heartily recommend it to my fellow small phone fans. All in all, the ASUS ZenFone 8 checks most of the requirements needed for a compact flagship device. It's lightweight, powerful, has good cameras, and the battery performance is respectable. However, you shouldn't get it just because it's cheaper than dedicated gaming phones. With a starting price of RM2699, there's not much to nitpick because there aren't many Android phones that come with this size and have high-end specs. The closest option would be the Xiaomi Mi 11 at RM2999, which has the same price as the ASUS ZenFone 8 Flip. If you prefer the iOS experience, then there's the iPhone 12 mini starting from RM3399.

With that said, we have covered ASUS Zenfone 8’s main issue – thermal management. Using the High-Performance mode with 120Hz enabled results in a rather uncomfortable experience, as the entire device slowly builds up heat. On the other hand, even at 58-59°C on the processor, and playing games at a maximum brightness outdoors, the device didn’t seem to want to shut down, which is good… probably.

There’s definitely a market for smaller, more compact flagships in the marketplace since not everyone is comfortable handling big phones. What I really like about the ZenFone 8 is that it doesn’t really compromise on performance to deliver that small phone experience. The ASUS Zenfone 8 8GB + 128GB is priced at PHP 34,995, while the 16GB + 256GB model is at PHP 39,995. Those are lovely price tags for a flagship smartphone, especially the base model. This also puts the Zenfone 8 as one of the most affordable 16GB RAM-equipped smartphones in the Philippine market. It’s not a simple decision to make, though, considering that in that price range, you’ll also start considering the likes of the OnePlus 9 5G, Xiaomi Mi 11, ROG Phone 5 Classic, and even the Zenfone 8 Flip. But if you really want a smartphone with a compact build and have the most RAM for the budget, get the Zenfone 8. With the Zenfone 8, ASUS is bringing a compact flagship back to Android. Like Apple’s iPhone 12 mini, the Zenfone 8 proves that small handsets don’t have to compromise on performance or specs. It’s a niche category for sure, but one with a vocal following. Kudos to ASUS for taking the plunge and making a small phone with premium materials, a gorgeous display, competitive shooters, great audio, outstanding performance, and clean software. If you’ve been waiting for a tiny but mighty Android flagship, the Zenfone 8 is the one. The only truly missing feature here is wireless charging. While that’s important to us, many of you won’t care. The Zenfone 8’s middling battery life is an issue, though -- one that it shares with the iPhone 12 mini -- but thankfully, it’s manageable. Ultimately, with no direct competition and a rumored $599 US price tag, this small flagship is a big winner.

If you’re looking for something a little different when it comes to your laptops and smartphones, ASUS has gotta be one of your go-tos. Using the company’s dual-screen laptops over the past couple years has changed what I expect from a mobile computer … and the latest ROG Phone is so well-equipped, it tempted even a non-gamer like myself. Compared to those envelope-pushers, ASUS’s two new Zenfones are far tamer offerings. That’s because they’re trying to appeal to a more mainstream audience, while still offering features other manufacturers have mostly written off. The question is whether either one goes far enough.

The Zenfone 8 looks promising, but pricing will play the biggest role in determining our recommendation. At $599, it's a pretty good deal; at $799, not so much. The Asus Zenfone 8 is a rare occurrence. It's a unique phone with a niche of its own, but this wasn't enough for Asus. They've built an enthusiast's smartphone with brilliant execution and a laundry list of features you rarely see all in one place, not even in larger devices. Much like with its ROG Phone lineup of gaming phones, the Zenfone 8 is a non-compromise device built from the ground up to excel in all important aspects of smartphone operation.

While I’m sure Asus would be happy to own this market by itself, I hope this portends more small(ish) Android flagships. I love using the gigantic Galaxy S21 Ultra, but the Zenfone 8 proves that there is no reason why you need to sacrifice performance for a more compact design. The Asus Zenfone 8 has earned itself a place among the best smartphones available today.

Finally, there’s the continued issue of availability and limited releases depending on country and markets. I had asked ASUS about their recent track-record of having extremely slow roll-outs, with users sometimes waiting months to be able to purchase the phones in their specific region or country. Similarly, the Zenfone 8 series don’t have any concrete sell date or more specific pricing beyond the European start prices showcased in the above slide. ASUS had replied that they’re aiming to do better this year, but again shying away from disclosing any more concrete per-country availability information.

Making a smartphone purchasing decision is tough, but for small phone lovers, there aren’t many choices. The ZenFone 8 joins the incredibly small list of compact flagship phones, and it makes a splash by jumping straight up to the top of the list. ASUS doesn’t ask you to compromise on the performance, battery life, display, speakers, or software, and even if the cameras leave a bit to be desired, the competitive price makes up for it.

And finally, we come to the iPhone 12 Mini, of course. Is it the Zenfone 8’s only real competitor? I don’t think so. It’s smaller and probably easier to operate (although those hard edges really hurt your hand) but it’s also more expensive and the battery life is underwhelming, to say the least. The iPhone 12 Mini is also an iOS device (duh, obviously) and people don’t change sides all that often.

There’s always a sacrifice to be made with smaller phones. Asus tried really hard to make the Zenfone 8 a top-performing flagship in a small, easy-to-use piece of hardware. It very nearly got everything right, yet just a few things hold the Zenfone 8 back. The most glaring issues to me are battery life and the camera. While the battery life is generally good, flipping on features such as the always-on display takes a noticeable hit on battery life. Furthermore, while the main camera gets the job done, the ultra-wide camera falls behind the competition. The Zenfone 8 also doesn’t support the optical zoom that many of its competitors do. There’s still plenty to like.

All that said, the ZenFone 8 will be the right fit for a specific type of person, and I can heartily recommend it to my fellow small phone fans. You’ll get flagship-level build quality and performance quite literally in the palm of your hand.

Commentaire
Qualcomm Adreno 660:
