The ASUS ROG Ally X (2024) is a handheld gaming PC designed to take your favorite titles on-the-go. With the AMD Z1 Extreme processor and 24GB of RAM, you'll find that the ROG Ally X packs a punch in the power department. It's capable of playing games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 at over 100 FPS using recommended settings. USB4 and USB-C allow the ROG Ally X to be converted to a desktop through a USB dock, making it even more versatile. If you're in the market for a portable gaming system and you want one of the most versatile options on the market, yes. Coming in at $800, the ASUS ROG Ally X is a more premium option than the Steam Deck or the Lenovo Legion Go. However, the ROG Ally X comes with 50% more RAM and 100% more storage than the Legion Go.

The ROG Ally X may not convince most current Ally owners to upgrade, especially not on a performance basis, but it has some objectively sweet improvements. A redesigned chassis with several ergonomic and feedback improvements, superior connectivity, and much longer battery life make a difference. Even though I may prefer the slightly slimmer design of the original, the added cost seems worth the concessions and price difference. The best Steam Deck alternative just got better.

Now comes the main question. That if you read this review you might be wondering, should I buy this device? I think for anyone who loves gaming and wants an extremely portable way to do so, this is an excellent purchase to make. In my personal opinion, this is the best gaming handheld on the market right now. I find it nearly as comfortable as the Steam Deck, maybe even more so. It runs games with better performance in any of the games I have tested, too. While the overall user interface is better on Steam Deck, this isn’t by a whole lot. I think the big takeaway here is asking yourself if all you’re doing is playing Steam games. If you play games in different clients, I think the ROG Ally X is the clear choice.

The ROG Ally X was introduced as a minor refresh to the Ally, but it is much better than the original in every possible way. You get double the battery life, a much more comfortable design, and a small performance uplift. For the asking price of Rs 89,990, it is considerably expensive than the Ally or even the Steam Deck. In fact, ASUS has dropped the price of the original Ally with the Z1 Extreme CPU down to Rs 40,000. For this reason alone, I would not recommend buying the Ally X if you already own any of the popular AMD Z1 Extreme powered consoles.Rather the Ally X is more suitable for the ones who have been holding back and saving their money for an all-round champion.

When it launched in 2023, the Asus ROG Ally set a high baseline for Windows-based gaming handhelds. It couldn't touch the Steam Deck OLED in terms of battery efficiency, but its impressive performance on modern games, its compact and lightweight design, and its 120Hz display made it the handheld to beat. With the ROG Ally X, Asus has clearly kept what already worked well and improved what was lacking. The device's bigger battery, faster (and more) memory, and better cooling results in an efficient and consistent performer that beats out the competition on nearly every metric. The cost of those crucial upgrades, however, is rather steep.

And I truly wish that chip is in the Ally X. Perhaps the battery life could be extended even further too. Now then, I have a dilemma. Since I am already using an ROG Ally, should I upgrade to the Ally X? Is it even considered an upgrade since the performance is the same, but I get a bunch of quality of life improvements on the Ally X? As for the price, the ROG Ally X is at RM4,299 – which is a whole thousand more than the ROG Ally when it was first announced. Given that the Ally has come down in price, it’s not easy to pick between the Ally and the Ally X. Remember – Ally X has a lot of upgrades over the original Ally, but ultimately – you still get the same level of performance at double the battery life and no more annoying fan noise.

The ASUS ROG Ally X is quite probably the most decent Windows gaming handheld I have reviewed in a long time. It’s a console I can definitely and whole-heartedly recommend, though its RM4,299 price tag is almost certainly going to cause hesitation among potential adopters, especially among newcomers to the gaming handheld ecosystem. As pricey as it is, though, the overall improvements with this handheld make it hard to recommend folks to opt for the first generation Ally. Again, it’s more polished, has significantly improved battery life, a microSD card slot that won’t barbeque your external storage with its thermals, and ports that are infinitely more practical for the user.

With all the improvements made, the ROG Ally X now easily gives the Legion Go a run for its money as the best gaming handheld right now. I also like that it now sports a more ergonomic button layout, with the back buttons being made smaller, which should help reduce accidental presses during gameplay sessions. Additionally, the analog sticks and face buttons are now positioned at a more comfortable angle, making it easier and more comfortable for gamers to move their thumbs between them. I wish ROG could have made more changes to the ROG Ally X, such as detachable controllers or a back stand, for example.

While the improvements are impressive, should you upgrade to the ROG Ally X if you already own the original with the Z1 Extreme in the Philippines? Our recommendation is to skip it if you can since you’ve most likely invested enough money to swap out the SSD, buy a JSAUX grip case for it, and maybe even a high-capacity power bank to extend gameplay while you’re out and about. The improvements are impressive but we think that you should wait for something with better internals to come around unless you’ve got a stacked bank account or your original breaks down beyond repair.

The ASUS ROG Ally X is easily the best gaming handheld on the market right now. What gives it that title? Battery life. Plain and simple, battery life. The rest of the unit is on par with other handhelds on the market but it excels in battery life and that’s where many users are going to love it. Now, that said, this unit is pricier than others and pricier than last year’s model. Whether you want to spend the extra money for better battery life is your choice.

The Asus Ally X, for me, is the best Windows handheld on the market. It is indeed impressive, and I wonder about the engineering effort that went into making the Ally X a powerful device in a compact form factor. Although it doesn’t come cheap (I wish it were priced lower), it is terrific for what it offers. A supercharged handheld console that brings PC gaming straight out of the box to a form factor I can take everywhere I go becomes even more tempting.

In this episode of Tech Takedown, Paul makes his case for why the ASUS ROG Ally X is the best gaming handheld you can currently buy. With its improved design, slightly beefier specs, and fixes, in many ways it is the best Windows 11 gaming handheld. But… in Tony’s favor, compared to the very refined Steam Deck OLED - which has a gorgeous display and isn’t plagued by Windows 11's horrible touch interface, it all comes down to performance vs usability. Which handheld do you think wins?

Ultimately, we can't tell you whether the extra investment is worth it, because it's going to depend a lot on how you use the hardware. In a way, the Ally X and Steam Deck serve somewhat different niches. If you are primarily keen on indie games and emulation of older systems, then the Steam Deck might be a better choice. However, if you want the flexibility of a full Windows experience, and the horsepower to handle modern AAA games and PS3 emulation, then the ASUS ROG Ally X is for you.

The Asus ROG Ally X is the surprise follow-up to the ROG Ally, and is the latest entry in the increasingly-competitive handheld gaming PC market. Since Valve fired the starting gun on this latest arms race with the excellent Steam Deck, various gaming laptop makers have been keen to release their own handhelds, with the likes of MSI and Zotac releasing, or planning to release, their own takes on the form factor. Arguably the breakout star of this new breed of device was the original ROG Ally, which was launched in 2023. Less than a year later, Asus surprised us all by releasing a follow-up, the ROG Ally X.

The Asus ROG Ally X is arguably the best Windows 11 handheld yet thanks to its improved battery life, performance, and more ergonomic design. The ROG Ally X doesn’t check all the boxes I personally need in a handheld. The one-two punch of performance and battery life is tempting, but not tempting enough to steer me away from a $549 or $649 Steam Deck OLED that will play my legacy library of Steam games more easily, then reliably go to sleep when I want to put it away. The customer support controversy is just one more reason to hesitate. But if you must have Windows or play the latest games on the go, the Ally X is the best Windows handheld yet. I hope it normalizes bigger batteries and VRR screens, and I hope Asus will seriously consider a SteamOS version, too. I hope to test it with Bazzite, an unofficial SteamOS clone, later this year.

And I have to give Asus some props for Armoury Crate SE, its skin and utility software. I hate the full Armoury Crate that's on the company's ROG laptops, mostly because it's a hot mess of conflicting places to change settings. SE is designed to run on a smaller screen and is more manageable, though still a bit confusing. In addition to essential features, like control binding for both gamepad and desktop modes and lighting control, it also lets you manually adjust the fan and power settings, change the among of memory dedicated to the iGPU (though I didn't test it) and more. Between the price, the problems inherent in grafting a console-like experience on Windows and the uncertainty of how well any particular game may run on it, especially in a couple of years, it's hard to give anything other than a qualified recommendation for the Ally X.

The Asus ROG Ally X may not boast a new processor or snazzy OLED screen tech, but it fixes practically every complaint that consumers had about the first-gen handheld. It’s more ergonomically shaped with better control placement, offers improved cooling, boosted RAM and storage and, most importantly, a massive improvement in battery life. In fact, I’d argue that the ROG Ally X’s 80Wh battery is the main reason to opt for it over competing handhelds like the ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go, even at a more premium price point. The handheld delivers essentially double what you’d get from the regular Ally, offering around three hours of battery life in AAA games at the highest graphical settings in Performance mode, and over two hours in Turbo mode, with significantly better performance in certain titles. It’s still not going to beat something like the Nintendo Switch OLED, but for a PC gaming-focused handheld, it leads the pack.

If you’re new to the whole PC gaming handheld thing, and want to play more than just your Steam library without messing about with Linux, the Asus ROG Ally X is now the obvious choice. It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.

A holistically better version of the 2023 model, the ROG Ally X is still a niche device at heart. If you want as much control over your portable gaming experience as possible, this is the best there is in Australia. Directly addressing the original’s pain points, the Ally X is easier to use and better equipped to handle the demands of modern gaming. In exchange for a higher price tag, you get more internal storage, a longer-lasting battery, and a better-quality design. If you already have the 2023 ROG Ally, however, these incremental yet meaningful improvements aren’t necessarily reason enough to immediately upgrade.

The Asus ROG Ally X is a mid-cycle refresh that maintains the original’s processor and display, yet its vital improvements are majorly successful. With 24GB of RAM, an 80Wh battery, 1TB of SSD storage, and ergonomic enhancements that bring new levels of comfort, we’d recommend the Ally X to anyone who has yet to invest in a handheld gaming console. If you already own an Asus ROG Ally with a Z1 Extreme Processor, it’s not worth spending $799 for something with the same chip and panel unless you’re a huge enthusiast for this type of hardware. If this is your first device and you’re willing to invest $799, the Asus ROG Ally X is the best Windows gaming handheld available.

While the ASUS ROG Ally X an “Ally 2” - it introduces several smaller yet significant hardware upgrades that make it a far more reliable and refined Windows gaming handheld system that pretty much fixes everything I didn’t like about the original. It’s clear that the ROG Ally X has been all about making the right choices, and Asus has mostly done that with its $800 handheld. In the company’s second go-around, Asus has fixed the ergonomic woes and looks set to tackle the battery life problem too. I would’ve loved to see more done in terms of upgrading the display and CPU, but as far as mid-gen refreshes go, this is a big one.

Now, the ROG Ally X will play said games for longer and be much more comfortable. At $1,599, $300 more expensive than the base Ally, it encroaches dangerously into entry-level gaming laptop territory. For example, clamshells like the Asus TUF A16 frequently go on sale for less than $2,000. Regardless, if the handheld gaming PC form factor is what you want, the ROG Ally X is shaping up to be a strong improver. It’s out soon, arriving in Australia on 22 July via JB Hi-Fi and the Asus E-store.

So far, the Asus ROG Ally X seems quite promising. Though it only serves as an in-between for the eventual ROG Ally 2, it sports tons of quality-of-life changes and enhancements that address nearly every issue buyers of the original ROG Ally had. For those looking for a new PC gaming handheld that's not the Steam Deck, this could truly be a contender for a true Steam Deck rival. However, the only drawback that could hold it back is that the processor hasn't been updated, meaning that performance will most likely not change too much from the original. And with that model's price going down while the ROG Ally X starts off quite pricey, this could end up being a major deciding factor in its success.
