In the DXOMARK Camera tests, the Apple iPhone 16 delivered a very good performance for its class. With the exception of the improved autofocus and faster lens in the ultra-wide camera, the new device uses nearly identical camera hardware to the predecessor, but software modifications have resulted in performance improvements across several test areas. In our evaluations, the camera captured nice still images and videos with excellent exposure, good contrast, and pleasant skin tones.

As usual, the answer will depend on your situation. If you’re going to upgrade, I think it makes the most sense for iPhone 14 or earlier generations, as you’ll see a much bigger difference than anyone using an iPhone 15. Even for those with a 15, it might be tempting to jump in order to gain new features like the Action Button, Camera Control and Apple Intelligence. At the time of writing, I can only comment on the first two, and they are a mixed bag overall. There’s no doubt the iPhone 16 does all the basics right, but is that enough in 2024? I’d say unless your heart is set on using Apple Intelligence, you’re better off waiting for the next generation or getting a now more affordable iPhone 15.

Owners of last year’s iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are arguably in the trickiest spot. Last year’s phones are still great, but they are now outdated in some ways because they don’t support Apple Intelligence. It remains to be seen how useful and how much of a difference Apple Intelligence will make, so I won’t run out to upgrade just yet. For now, it’s best to adopt a wait-and-see approach. If you have an older iPhone – iPhone 14 series or older – the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus represent a fantastic opportunity to upgrade. Even without Apple Intelligence, they are solid phones, and upgrading you gets you the convenience of USB-C charging. The ability to simplify your charging cables should not be overlooked.

At a time when iterative changes are the norm, Apple sets itself apart by closing the gap between its Pro and non-Pro lineup. The iPhone 16 is its most powerful base model to date, packing premium features at a mainstream price that gives it an edge in value over the 16 Plus, with the only differences being a bigger display and battery capacity at a higher cost. While the experience isn’t quite complete without the full iOS 18 rollout, the device’s all-rounded camera system, impressive hardware performance, and AI touch-ups offer a satisfying time.

The new iPhone this year is very similar to the last years iPhone - but whats new? The iPhone 16 has two cameras on the back and an aluminum frame. Today we are going to see how well that frame and Apples 2nd generation ceramic shield glass can handle the stress of every day life. This is an iPhone 16 durability test! And apple has recycled more than one thing this time.

I still can’t believe that we’re going on two years now without an update to the iPhone SE. But given how superb the iPhone 16 is this year, I’m much more inclined to pick this model up, especially since it shares a lot of the same features as the iPhone 16 Pro. I’m referring to the Action Button, Camera Controls and — once iOS 18.1 arrives — pretty much the same Apple Intelligence features. Equally as impressive are the iPhone 16 cameras, which for the price difference still put out sharp photos, particularly from the main lens. The only real area it’s missing out is in the telephoto department, but that’s the distinguishing reason you should consider the Pro models instead.

They say that ‘the best camera is the one you’ve got with you’. You may not always have your DSLR or mirrorless camera to hand, especially if you’re trying to keep the weight of your holiday luggage below 23 Kg, but your lightweight and ever-present iPhone 16 will do an excellent job of capturing photo opportunities wherever you encounter them - even underwater! The new Camera Control button may not be to everyone’s taste (like the Touch Bar on older MacBooks) but at the very least it makes you quicker on the draw when it comes to capturing a shot. Pro photographers should be wary of the lack of the ability to shoot in Pro RAW and the x2 52mm optical zoom may not be enough for street photographers who want a closer candid encounter with their subject.

The Apple iPhone 16 put in a solid display performance as the base model of the 16-series, providing very good brightness in nearly all tested conditions for a generally satisfying readability experience. However, if the screen’s automatic brightness is adapted to a middle-of-the-night smartphone check, it was too low when our eyes were not perfectly adapted to the dark room conditions, making the display hard to read. A manual adjustment of the brightness might be necessary in such cases. The display’s colors were accurate and pleasant, although a slight orange cast affected the rendering when viewing photos and HDR10 videos with True Tone activated.

iPhone 16 is an impressive entry in Apple's lineup that is said to get big AI features in the coming future. Sleek design, powerful A18 Bionic chipset, Camera Control, Action Button and flagship-level performance make it the most appealing option in the iPhone 16 series. Overall, the iPhone 16 promises a seamless user experience and impressive battery life, making it a compelling choice for both new and upgrading users from iPhone 14 or below.

The iPhone 16 is the best non-Pro iPhone ever made, and the most tempting iPhone in years from an Android perspective. In particular, I can't get over just how comfortable it is in the hand, and how nice the Ultramarine color is. Make sure you're not buying it for the future of iOS 18 — as no-one should buy something for the promise of future updates — but rather for what it is now: an excellent entry into the Apple ecosystem. The only problem is that while Apple has upped its game, so have its Android rivals. The iPhone 16 offers a compelling reason to switch to iOS, but the Google Pixel 9, Samsung Galaxy S24, and OnePlus 12 are only a few of the Android phones worth considering. Each offers similar specs to the iPhone 16, even exceeding it in some areas, and each is compelling for different reasons. If you're ready to jump ship, then the iPhone 16 is where you want to end up, but there are still plenty of reasons to stay put, too.

This year’s iPhone 16 Pro lineup is a mighty fine selection to choose from, but it’s the standard model that does more to impress, with a lot of the same features as the Pro. Camera Control and the 2x telephoto lens are great to have in particular, while the battery life is excellent. The screen’s refresh rate does disappoint, though Apple clearly believes most people don’t care – but you and I aren’t most people. As for the software features, it’s a real shame there’s no Apple Intelligence yet – especially as that’s one of the key features Apple is marketing this phone on. But the bottom line is that even without it the iPhone 16 represents great value for those who want this year’s iPhone.

If you’re looking to upgrade and your current phone is more than two years old, the iPhone 16 is an excellent choice. Owners of the iPhone 14 or older will definitely appreciate the updates here, not least the new features offered by Apple Intelligence. This might be the entry-level offering of the bunch (if you ignore the SE) but it has an impressive spec. Photos and games look incredible on the OLED display and the new A18 chip means it has bags of power to run even AAA games. Not only do images from the cameras look great, that 48MP main camera gives you a second focal length, so you get a 2x zoom as well as the 0.5x ultra wide angle option for creative shots.

The leap in processing and graphics power is certainly a welcome bonus, but Apple still hasn’t done anything to fix the underlying issues of the iPhone in terms of being a flagship. First and foremost, it’s ridiculous how it’s the only high-end smartphone in the market to have a 60Hz display. Moreover, it still has the slowest wired charging speed of any flagship out there, with its own wireless charging beating it to the punch — of course, this requires buying the new adaptor and MagSafe puck separately. But perhaps the most disappointing point of all: it still does not have a telephoto lens at this price point. My verdict for the iPhone 16, as with any base iPhone for the past couple of years, is that you should skip it if you already have a relatively recent iPhone.

This is a good year for the regular iPhones. With the Action Button, Camera Control, and substantial upgrades to the processor and camera, it can be argued that they get all, if not most, of the features of the Pro iPhones that users would want. Yes, for the folks who are looking for the latest and greatest iPhones in their pocket, which perform better than what they would need in the real world, and it is also a capable camera and content creation tool. The camera app has a set of new features that will let you move back to the native app if you are someone who likes granular control over your videos and photos. The microphone’s also fairly well-tuned to capture audio to compliment your videos well. But, if Apple Intelligence was a selling point for you, I would say wait. Until Apple releases the full version of Apple Intelligence globally, you should not bother getting the Apple iPhone 16.

Smartphones, in general, are now mature tech. Year after year we see that the upgrades have become incremental. In a way, the iPhone 16 is also an incremental update. I wish it had a faster screen. But it doesn't. The design, although boring, is solid. And in the rest of the components, the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus are a mix of everything old but gold and some new bits. Of the new bits, the action button is going to be useful to most users. At the same time the Camera Control button is not going to be useful to most users. Yet, the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus are solid phones. They are not the phones that iPhone 14 or the iPhone 15 users should move to, but they are perfect for anyone looking to upgrade to from iPhone 13 or older.

The iPhone 16 brings meaningful upgrades over the iPhone 15, with improved imaging capabilities, software enhancements, and the promise of Apple Intelligence features in the future. However, the absence of a higher refresh rate display and the slower USB-C port might disappoint some users. There aren’t any significant upgrades in the iPhone 16! The biggest disappointment for me is the 60Hz display! If you’re not interested in the A18’s powerful performance and AI features, I suggest going for the iPhone 15. Its price is likely to drop further, as Apple has already slashed it by $100. So, the iPhone 15 could be around NPR 120,000. Is spending NPR 30,000-35,000 for slightly better performance, macro photography, and AI features worth it for you? Well, that’s entirely up to you!

While I would usually tell people to go for the previous generation’s Pro / Pro Max model, the iPhone 16 is the first time I would suggest otherwise. It brings so much to the table, especially with the new Apple A18 chip, that the only reason you would consider getting the 15 Pro / Pro Max is for the dedicated telephoto camera and higher refresh rate, and the same can be said for the 16 Pro / Pro Max too. For everything else and for the average consumer, the iPhone 16 (as well as the 16 Plus) is the better buy, especially given its price.

I have received many requests from readers asking if the iPhone 16 is worth getting over the iPhone 16 Pro or 16 Pro Max. Well, I would say the gap between Apple’s base iPhones and its Pro models feels narrower than ever. There are plenty of reasons to choose the iPhone 16—not just because it’s faster, but also because it’s the most compact iPhone in Apple’s current lineup. The iPhone 16 is a great fit for people who don’t need the Pro features or prices. It’s Apple’s most popular iPhone, and now it’s even better.

Almost everything the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus does, they do very well. It has all the features most people need every day and a few more that are usually reserved for Apple’s Pro lineup. The iPhone 16 Pro still has more features, but they’ve ventured into the niche arena, addressing the needs of high-end users, such as video producers and professional content creators. If you're using an iPhone 14 or iPhone 15, upgrading to the iPhone 16 may not feel worthwhile. However, for iPhone 13 users or older, or if you're considering switching from Android to iOS, the iPhone 16 offers enough value to justify the upgrade, provided you can overlook certain notable omissions like the lack of a 120Hz display, AOD support, and slow charging speeds.

The iPhone 16 is available now from Apple's website, Best Buy, or just about any consumer electronics store. You can trip and fall and wind up in a store that sells the iPhone. The iPhone 16 starts at $799. This is Apple's base iPhone for the moment, unless you count the iPhone SE. If you want an entry level into the Apple ecosystem, this is your choice. What's really interesting about this phone is with that addition of the Camera Control, Action Button, and Apple Intelligence coming next month, the gap between the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Pro is at its narrowest point yet. It is hard to give the iPhone 16 any sort of "innovation crown" this year. Not that Apple is one for major changes, but even so, last year's iPhone 15 arguably brought about much more noticeable changes with the new OLED with a Dynamic Island, the move to USB Type-C and the new 48MP main camera. All of these attributes have naturally been carried forward to the iPhone 16. As for its own list of contributions, there is the new autofocusing ultrawide camera, the Camera Control button and a focus on Apple Intelligence in a big way. It is still mostly in the realm of promises and incoming features, but at least the hardware has been beefed up to presumably power all of the AI.

The release of the iPhone 16 is incredibly unusual for Apple. The manufacturer introduced two new buttons on the basic Model: the Action Button and Camera Control, let its users change the look of iOS 18, and presented a range of functions during the keynote that will not be available at launch. At the same time, they stuc to a display with an antiquated 60 Hz refresh rate, reintroduced the usual "there's the latest SoC with less graphics performance" strategy, and once again, created an artificial gap with the Pro models without RAW recording and without JPEG XL support. Rarely has it been so confusing to use a new iPhone. Once you get used to this confusion, the iPhone 16 is much more fun to use than older models.

The iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 don’t do anything particularly special this year. In fact, it’s determinedly mixed in many areas. The design of the camera housing has changed, which I don’t think does it any favours, and while the camera button is great in the way it works, I think its positioning could be improved. The display, meanwhile, really needs to move away from 60Hz because currently, Apple is shortchanging its customers. However, the faster chipset and better battery life are significant steps forward, and Apple Intelligence (when it arrives) may well prove another reason to upgrade from the iPhone 15 and earlier models, since those won’t support it.

If you are upgrading from an older iPhone model than an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro might be a much better option, as this year's standard iPhone isn't too big of an upgrade. The iPhone 15 Pro in particular will also get Apple Intelligence, which is one of the main selling points for the new iPhones. Some of the reasons to buy an iPhone 16 would be its slightly better battery life and the faster wireless charging. Now, yes, the A18 chip appears to be much more capable, but unless you want to play AAA games it is unnecessary horse power that you probably won't use. There's also the new Camera Control button, but that hardly sounds like a must-have feature for your average user.

The iPhone 16 is one of the most well-rounded base models we've seen from Apple. It's a finely made handset with an appealing design, long battery battery life, fast wireless radios, and capable cameras. Its Action Button, Camera Control, and fast charging bring it close to feature parity with the Pro models, and an A18 processor means it can run Apple Intelligence when it arrives later this year. You might still want an iPhone Pro for increased power, an always-on display, or an even better camera, while others might prefer the bigger screen and better battery life of the 16 Plus. But thanks to its combination of price and usability, the iPhone 16 is the model we recommend for most people, making it our Editors' Choice.

That's to say, you shouldn't buy the iPhone 16 for its AI capabilities -- not yet, at least. Until the software is out of beta, my advice is that unless your carrier offers a generous trade-in deal for your iPhone 14 or iPhone 15, you should wait a few more months and see how Apple progresses with its AI developments and if there are any features you would use on a regular basis. Until then, I'll continue to evaluate the iPhone 16 for what it is, and you should consider it for what it offers today. That means buying it for the performant A18 chipset, the more flexible camera system, and the exceptional battery life. If you value one-handed usability and comfort, go with the smaller iPhone 16.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro have managed to find another level in a category where yearly upgrades are incremental at best. But Apple has still found several ways to innovate, and it cleverly put a lot of work into making the already excellent camera go to another level. And with Apple Intelligence just around the corner, we expect customers will be lining up to upgrade.

I hope I’ve been able to give you some guidance on whether you should choose an iPhone 16, an iPhone 16 Plus or to go with one of the more expensive Pro models. It really comes down to whether you need/want the high-end camera features of the more Pro variants, or demand a 120Hz display. If not, save yourself between $200 and $400 by getting one of the more affordable models. And I’m impressed enough with the AI capabilities in the iPhone 16 that you might even consider upgrading from its immediate predecessor — something that’s almost never true. If you stick with your iPhone 15, you’ll never get Apple Intelligence. Just something to think about.

With the iPhone 16, Apple has almost closed the gap between its best phone for most people and the one intended for the most demanding power users. It’s a relief to not pine for what could be coming on the iPhone 17 since a lot of the new features on the iPhone 16 Pro are already here. And while some of them will require time to master, it’s great that they’re on the iPhone 16 at all. There are some Pro features you’ll still have to spend more for, like ProRAW photos, ProRES video, a 120Hz display, a 5x telephoto camera and multi-track recording in Voice Memos. But those are luxuries not everyone needs. For this reason, the regular iPhone will likely suit your needs just fine, since splurging on the high-end model has become more of an indulgence than a necessity.

We remain pretty miffed about that 60Hz screen technology (please Apple, fix it on the iPhone 17!) but that really is our only gripe this year. The iPhone 16 is no no-brainer for anyone looking to upgrade especially as it's one of the only devices that will get Apple Intelligence later this year. It features that bold new look, gets the Action and Camera Control buttons plus there's that stupendously fast A18 processor and upgraded rear cameras. The tougher design should also help keep it looking box-fresh for longer and it comes with Wi-Fi 7, eSIM technology for faster set-up (most UK networks now offer this service) and the latest iOS 18 operating system. There's no price rise in 2024, the wireless charging is quicker and there's a bigger battery inside which means you won't have to worry about things running flat. So yes, other than that screen complaint, this is the ultimate iPhone upgrade that comes highly recommended.

So, let’s answer the question above. Should you buy the iPhone 16? Yeah, you should. I’ve had a fantastic time using it over this review period, and out of all the new iPhones available this year, it’s the one I ordered as my next personal smartphone. The base model iPhone has often felt like a notable downgrade from its Pro counterparts, but that’s not the case this year. Whether it’s the design, performance, camera, software, or extra hardware features like the Action button and Camera Control, you don’t make any severe compromises when choosing the iPhone 16 this year instead of the iPhone 16 Pro. So long as they can get used to the 60Hz screen and the lack of an always-on display (they will), I think most people will be hard-pressed to justify buying one of the more expensive iPhones over the iPhone 16. If you’re in the market for a new iPhone this year, this is the one to get.

For the battery life increase alone, yes, the entry-level iPhone 16 models are worth it, but I recommend the iPhone 16 Plus even more. Battery life anxiety is real. Nothing is worse than wondering if I'll be able to order an Uber at the end of the night because I'm only at 20%. With the iPhone 16 Plus, however, lasting nearly 19 hours on a single charge, its power efficiency makes it worth every single penny. On top of that, there's a new Camera Control button, a tougher display, improved zoom up to 2X, the inheritance of the Action Button, and three stunning new colors (Ultramarine, Pink, and Teal).

After this year's Apple keynote on the new iPhone models, I was really disillusioned. Somehow there seemed to be hardly any innovations that were relevant to me. This impression faded a little after the first few hours with the iPhone 16. This is because the action button and the new camera control significantly change the operation of the basic model. At the same time, they bring functions to the fore that I never used on older models. Together with the new iOS 18, this results in a completely new user experience—and I'm really keen to explore it further. Since Apple relies on the A18 Bionic, this user experience is also incredibly fluid and "snappy". Unfortunately, there is again only one panel with 60 Hz, which will certainly be one of the biggest criticisms of the iPhone 16 in my final test. I also don't like the fact that Apple is still completely missing out on potentials such as spatial recording. So: It remains exciting with the iPhone 16—I'll be back soon with more test impressions!

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are better than the previous installment inside and out, as to be expected. But their updated design and the versatility brought by the addition of the action and camera buttons should make even owners of last year’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus consider trading in. The above conclusion also applies to the performance improvements brought by the A18 chip and the impending arrival of Apple Intelligence in the coming weeks. The elaborate set of generative AI tools baked into iOS is all but guaranteed to make a difference in the daily routine of every iPhone 16 user — from a first-time adopter to a longtime follower. As usual, the iPhone 16 is the one to get if you prioritize compactness and ergonomics over everything else.

Overall, reviewers see the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus as solid upgrades, particularly for those coming from older models. The Verge suggests it’s a good year to upgrade, especially for those holding onto older iPhones. TechRadar recommends the upgrade for anyone with an iPhone 14 Plus or older. Mashable particularly praises the iPhone 16 Plus, suggesting it might be a better buy than the iPhone 16 Pro for many users. While the lack of a high refresh rate display is consistently noted as a downside, most if not all reviews see improved performance, camera capabilities and battery life as significant positives.

As a content creator and a photographer, I feel these new iPhones are tailor-made for me. I’ve seen people online saying that it’s not a huge upgrade from the 14 Pro, which sure, the 14 Pro is an amazing phone and offered a nice jump up in camera quality at the time and still has very capable photography optics. However, it’s still missing much of the pro software and video support that Apple has added over the past two generations. Things like LOG, Audio Mix, the Fusion camera and Camera Controls are game chargers for creators. I never want to use an iPhone without dedicated camera buttons again. Even for capturing behind-the-scenes footage, the iPhone 16 proves to be worth the upgrade.

It’s a good year for the basic iPhones, and that hasn’t been the case over the past few generations. To be sure, there’s nothing groundbreaking here, and certainly nothing you should trade in your iPhone 15 for. But if you’ve been on the fence for a while about upgrading from an 11 or 12, then I think this is the year to go for it. You’ll get a couple of new buttons to play with, and who knows, maybe you’ll get along better with the Camera Control than I did.

The days of upgrading your phone every year for the one big new feature are far behind us, and the iPhone 16 is proof. And that's not a bad thing. Instead, the iPhone 16 is about how all the small things come together to result in a phone that feels faster, more intuitive and more customizable than years past. I wouldn't recommend buying the iPhone 16 just for the Camera Control button or the better ultrawide camera. But when you think about how the Camera Control key, the Action button and the Dynamic Island come together, along with the camera and battery improvements Apple has made over the last several years, you have a compelling upgrade for someone coming from an older phone.

Apple’s making it even harder than ever before for people to choose which iPhone to buy. That’s because the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus get a lot of the same features as the iPhone 16 Pros, while also sporting the same prices as before. You could argue that this makes the standard iPhone even better value, especially when you factor how they effectively have the same Apple Intelligence features and Camera Control button.

Like most years, you really can’t go wrong with any iPhone model. Regular phone users will be able to get better photos, longer battery life and cool pro-ish features like the Action Button and Camera Control with this year’s 16 models. Pros who use their phones for content capture, shooting short films, and taking high-end photos will be able to get even more out of the Pro iPhones, and people who don’t want a larger phone will definitely be happier to know that both the 16 Pro and Pro Max now have identical camera systems.

Apple's iPhone 16 is official, and it arrives with some vibrant new color options, a new-look (or old-look if you go back far enough) camera bump and, most interestingly, a couple of new buttons. I was on the ground for the 'It's Glowtime' event at Apple HQ in Cupertino, California, and as Tim Cook wrapped up the keynote I dashed out of the Steve Jobs Theater and made a beeline for the media area and the iPhone 16. First, the colors are fantastic and best described simply as 'fun', at least for most shades. Ultramarine (a mix of blues, but don't call it blue), pink, and teal all come together to freshen up the iPhone palette, and look delightful. I think Pro buyers will be a little upset with the vibrant options here, though, given the more neutral shades on offer for the Pro and Pro Max.
