Like last year’s iteration, Apple has combined several impressive components to deliver superb performance on the iPhone 16 Pro, but the same conclusion has been reached on this device as it was on the iPhone 15 Pro – it needs something special. That thing may be Apple Intelligence, and we’ll have a better idea of what it improves the overall experience of the iPhone 16 Pro in December (if you’re in South Africa), but the addition of a new camera control feature is not enough to fully justify upgrading from the 15 Pro to the 16 Pro. It is simply the by-product of the iterative nature of flagship phone releases these days.

Apple launched the iPhone 16 series back in late September 2024. If you want a Pro model without any extra bulk, the iPhone 16 Pro is the way to go. Thanks to thinner bezels, this year's model features a 6.3-inch display instead of the 6.1-inch screen found on the iPhone 15 Pro. Apart from a bigger display, there's a new Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 Pro that makes it easier for you to take photos and videos while fine-tuning settings as you do. It's like a dedicated shutter button but supercharged more features. The key enhancements on the iPhone 16 Pro come with Apple Intelligence. You get features like an upgraded Siri, Memory Movies in Photos, Notification summaries, and more. Apple Intelligence is also supported on the iPhone 15 Pro, meaning you can access the features without upgrading to the newer model. However, it could be confusing to decide if you need to upgrade (and there are plenty of reasons to). We are here to help. Here are the main differences between the two compact Pro iPhones.

The iPhone 16 Pro is an easy handset to recommend if you want a flagship Apple smartphone, and that’s not just because it has completely replaced the excellent iPhone 15 Pro. It’s a formidable smartphone for watching movies, and it’s equally impressive when it comes to music too. Ultimately, it comes down to subtlety – something other manufacturers seem to overlook in favour of chasing the brightest screens or longest list of audio features. Apple’s attention to detail is practically unrivalled, and that enhances every aspect of the 16 Pro’s AV experience in a meaningful way.

Overall, the iPhone 16 Pro is arguably the best flagship phone under $1,000. You get the same excellent cameras as the iPhone 16 Pro Max for $200 less and I think the screen is big enough at 6.3 inches while being easy to use with one hand. I also like the improved battery life, handy Camera Control and compelling Audio Mix feature for videos. The Apple Intelligence capabilities — such as Writing Tools, the new Siri and Cleanup — show promise, but some of the more exciting features like ChatGPT integration, Image Playground and the Google Lens-like Visual Intelligence are coming later. In terms of the competition, I think the Galaxy S24 Plus and Google Pixel 9 Pro have more compelling AI features right now. But I prefer the camera system from the iPhone in many cases and the extra performance from its A18 Pro chip.

With or without the full suite of Apple Intelligence features, the iPhone 16 Pro is a very good phone. It’s not without its missteps though, and for the first time I think the camera system is actually less intuitive, with more work needed to achieve really exceptional photos. There’s still a lot to like, and if you’re coming from anything but an iPhone 15 Pro the benefits are here. It’s a better size than previous ‘small’ Pro iPhone models, it has better battery life and the areas that were already very good remain so, including the wonderful screen. Go for the iPhone 16 Pro Max if you’re after the best choice for media – that huge screen is ridiculously good – and go for the iPhone 16 Plus if battery is more important than fancy camera extras. Still, with everything considered, this is probably the best iPhone for most people.

All in all, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are solid phones with interesting features that I think some users will really like. Those fussy about photography will appreciate the freedom of Photographic Styles, while creators will almost certainly love the ability to be able to create 4K 120fps content with just a phone. And even if you don't care for these things, surely you can appreciate the improved performance and battery life.

The iPhone 16 Pro is a well-made, powerful, and high-quality smartphone in almost every sense. I’ve had a great time using it, but is it the iPhone you should rush out and buy? I’m not so sure. The biggest problem with the iPhone 16 Pro is just how good the regular iPhone 16 is. It has the same Action button and Camera Control, a very similar primary camera, equally great performance, and — in my experience — better battery life. It also has the same iOS 18 software, will get the same Apple Intelligence features, and has a lighter, more comfortable, and more colorful design. It also costs $200 less. If you need the 120Hz screen or the extra camera features, the iPhone 16 Pro has legitimate advantages over its cheaper sibling — and I think you’ll have a great time with it. But if you can live without those things, the base iPhone 16 is the way to go this year. It’s the model I ordered for myself and the iPhone I think most people should buy.

Apart from a smaller screen, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max share the same specs, including the same A18 Pro processor. We tested the iPhone 16 Pro display, and as expected, the results were mostly the same as those for iPhone 16 Pro Max. Overall, these two products had a very similar performance despite a different screen-to-body ratio and some slight differences in color rendering.

Despite the iPhone 16 Pro's perhaps somewhat inexpressive design and lack of flashy solutions, the smartphone still offers a number of improvements, including a larger display, faster platform, better shooting capabilities, and higher battery life. This is at least what you expect from the update, and what users who upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro from a 2-3 year old smartphone will be happy about. From year to year, this is not as big an increase in functionality as it once was. But it's worth noting that this nostalgia is rather illusory, because at one time the changes between iPhone 4 and 4s or iPhone 5 and 5s were not very significant either, and Apple received its share of criticism for this.

As an iPhone 15 Pro Max owner, I’m trying to divorce myself from the conversation about upgrading to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. I’m already intrigued by the Camera Control button’s potential, delighted by sharper macro photography and am nodding my head approvingly at its battery life and that extra bit of screen space. But when the new iPhone’s big software features aren’t here yet (not that generative AI has demonstrated its value, anyway) and the iPhone Pro colors don’t leave me tempted? All I’ll say is that if I still had an iPhone 14 Pro, and my upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro would also include the bump to USB-C — or if I had an iPhone 13 Pro and didn’t have an always-on display — this would easily be a year where I preordered my new iPhone as I turned in this review to my editor.

“It's Glowtime”—that was Apple's slogan for this year's iPhone event, which was also supposed to be the starting signal for the era of artificial intelligence. It is now clear that Apple will eventually deliver AI functions to areas outside the US. The shock that certain countries in Europe were not included in the list of regions that would eventually receive Apple Intelligence was initially profound. Moreover, I was extremely skeptical as to whether the iPhone 16 Pro could offer any added value compared to last year's iPhone 15 Pro model. The value of the iPhone has increased once again compared to last year. It feels great, there are no or hardly any fingerprints left behind on the titanium frame.

There isn’t much to get excited about from the standpoint of new features with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro. The really interesting stuff surrounds Apple Intelligence and those features aren’t arriving straight away anyway in the UK, not to mention that they’ll also be arriving on the cheaper iPhone 16 range and the older iPhone 15 Pro. The new ultrawide camera is nice to have but I’d have preferred to see more development of the telephoto camera.

All in all, the iPhone 16 Pro is a quality flagship by Apple as expected. If you're using an older iPhone (14 and below), the upgrade is huge, particularly in battery life and camera performance. It's also slightly bigger and a bit more "affordable" than its predecessor, starting at RM4,999. However, comparing it with the iPhone 15 Pro is a different story. You see, Apple has been heavily promoting its Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 16 series with the Glow Time theme. So, imagine a casual customer, who is usually the main consumer of iPhones, finding out that none of these features are ready since launch day. It's quite a ballsy move for Apple, which has a reputation for completing a function before releasing it.

For anyone upgrading from an iPhone 12 or 13 Pro, the 16 Pro is a smart choice. The biggest wins will be the battery life, telephoto reach, and the brilliant screen. We wouldn't say the action button is enough of a sell to sway us, but if you like the idea of physical camera controls, it could add value to your shooting experience. For anyone with a 14 or 15 Pro, you probably shouldn't feel compelled to upgrade anytime soon. It's impossible not to be underwhelmed by Apple's software this year. Not only does it lack AI features that were announced at WWDC, but we also found it to be less stable than past iOS releases. With the starting capacity of the iPhone 16 Pro only sporting 128GB storage, and prices for the more sensible 256GB model starting at $1,099/£1,099/AU $1,999, this year, Apple is struggling to justify its premium.

Is it possible to check off nearly all the boxes but fail the assignment? If so, that’s what the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro do. They’re both good phones that fit comfortably in my hand, offer incredible software support, and pack reliable rear cameras that are easy to pick up and go. Apple’s build quality remains some of the best (though Google is now on equal footing), and I appreciate how simple it is to set up a new iPhone if you’ve ever used one before. However, the assignment was to sway me from my Android loyalties, and I don’t think either phone did that — nor do I think this generation will draw many other Android users over, either. Yes, Apple gets high marks for finally making plans to bring AI to the table, letting users customize their home screens in a brand-new way, and adopting RCS to make cross-platform communication easier, but I’ve already been able to do most of that on Android phones for years.

So here we are at the end of another iPhone review. What does the iPhone 16 Pro/Max give you that the iPhone 15 Pro/Max doesn’t? Well, in my opinion, not an awful lot. If you’ve got an iPhone 15 Pro and you want a longer zoom without having to get a bigger phone, then there’s good news there. And the extra pixels on the ultrawide lens sometimes come in handy.Otherwise, image quality is more or less the same, and even experts like me will struggle to find the differences. For the average person, it’ll be nigh-on impossible to tell. The new Camera Control button is nice if you really want a physical button in that location, but after years of not having one and using the screen to control my phone’s camera, I’m not convinced it’s altogether essential.

The iPhone 16 Pro strikes the best balance of size and capability with a big-enough screen and all the high-end trimmings squeezed into a relatively small frame. The addition of the 5x optical zoom brings Apple’s smaller Pro up to parity with its monster 16 Pro Max, so the choice for iPhone buyers is now simply about size and price, not capability. The faster chip and camera upgrades, such as the fun photographic styles, are welcome. The new camera control button is a mixed bag: very handy for quickly launching the camera but fiddly to use to adjust settings and difficult to press hard enough to capture an image without shaking the phone. It needs some work to be great and is not ideally placed for the left-handed.

The iPhone 16 Pro is quite boring, and I feel Apple intended it to be that way. That may not be the case with the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which appeals to customers seeking a bigger screen, better battery life, and a larger form factor, along with a desire to make an opulent statement. Both the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are Pro devices that offer the best design, screen, camera, and performance. Still, I believe the iPhone 16 Pro has an understated elegance that appeals to consumers looking for quality and longevity, rather than those who want to create a trend on social media.

Without the Apple Intelligence features, it would be easy to dismiss the iPhone 16 Pro as having only very small improvements. However, the sum of these improvements makes this model considerably better than previous versions. If you have had your current phone for two years or more, then the upgrade to the 16 Pro definitely makes sense. Plus, the potential for Apple Intelligence is huge, and once they launch, you’re not going to want to be using a phone that doesn’t support them. Upgrading from last year’s model might not seem like the big step that it once was, but there are still iterative changes that will tempt those that want to stay ahead of the game. For me, the slightly bigger screen and the 5x camera are those killer features.

The iPhone 16 Pro brings all the good things you'd expect from it. The premium build makes a strong first impression and if Apple's talk on materials is at least half true, it should be a long-lasting impression too. Improvements to battery life across the lineup didn't skip the 16 Pro and it's got pretty much the best endurance in this somewhat hypothetical small Pro class. Also Pro is its camera system, now upgraded with better reach on the telephoto end and a new ultrawide (that has its small missteps). The Camera Control is another potential plus for the right kind of user. Some of the Apple-specific downsides remain - the slow charging remains slow against direct rivals, not to mention comparing against the best in business.

The Apple iPhone 16 Pro is the flagship phone for the world's biggest tech company, and it duly delivers in the categories we expect it to: power and ease of use. The new 48MP camera is also improved from last year in an attempt to keep up with the best in the field, while transferring from Android to iOS has been made more seamless. However, charging is still tortuously slow, the smaller model's screen, while slightly larger than last year, feels a little too small, and the overall lack of innovation makes me question whether this is a needed upgrade for iPhone 15 owners, or indeed whether you should be choosing the Pro over the regular iPhone 16...

Now, for the verdict. Should you buy the iPhone 16 Pro (Max)? That really depends on what you’re looking for out of a phone and what phone you are currently using. If you’re on an iPhone 14 Pro or older, I’d say it’s a good upgrade. But if you’re on an iPhone 15 Pro, then it’s not really worth upgrading to the iPhone 16 Pro (even though I did). If you’re an Android user thinking about switching to the iPhone to see what the hype is about, the iPhone 16 Pro is a really great option to check out iPhone for the first time. It’s their best iPhone they’ve ever made, because of course it is. It’s very solid for the price. And in some cases, cheaper than some Android flagships these days.

If you own an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro, you can sit out this year -- or at least wait for the arrival of Apple Intelligence. I really like the Camera Control button and the way Apple handles Photographic Styles and Moods with the iPhone 16 Pro, but these features cater to my specific interest in smartphone photography and address my core complaints about how the iPhone 15 Pro processes images. If this resonates with you, upgrading to the iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max might be worth it.

Apple has done a fine job retooling the iPhone 16 Pro. It contains meaningful updates this year that include a larger display, a turbocharged processor, a sharper telephoto camera, and a big jump in battery life. If you want a reasonably sized flagship phone with tons of power, it's easy to recommend the 16 Pro. If you want an even bigger screen or the absolute longest battery life from an iPhone, the 16 Pro Max is the obvious choice. But it's also worth noting that you probably don't need the increase in power or the professional camera features offered by the Pro models, so the regular iPhone 16 is our Editors' Choice winner and our top recommendation for most people.

Apple Intelligence is a key offering that the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max bring to users. And that is not here yet. But it will come. At the moment though, even without the Apple Intelligence, the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Pro are solid phones. In particular I love the A18 Pro chipset, which enables not only top performance but also the kind of performance that doesn't make the phone heat. The rest of the hardware too is fantastic, and the camera of the iPhone 16 Pro is versatile. It is great at clicking good photos, and for video recording it is unmatched by any other phone. But do know that the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max are expensive phones.

More than ever, it’s hard to recommend the Pro model iPhone over the non-Pro model. It’s a tiny bit faster, has a dedicated 5x telephoto camera, and can take some really fancy high-end video in formats that only pros will care about. It has ProMotion and an always-on display, but frankly, it’s kind of crazy that Apple doesn’t include those things on the regular iPhone at this point. The big selling points—longer battery life, the Camera Control button, Apple Intelligence (eventually)—are all available on the non-Pro model which also now has the Action button, the new Photographic Styles, and macro photography, too. In benchmarks and specs sheets, the iPhone 16 Pro is clearly better than last year’s iPhones, but when you use it every day, does it really feel different?

Apple’s flagship phones for 2024, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max get larger displays, a camera control button and support for upcoming AI features. Both sizes sport the same triple cameras on the rear (including the 5X telephoto and upgraded ultrawide camera). They have 5G, Apple Pay, WiFi 7, Face ID, new photographic styles and more.

As it stands, even without Apple Intelligence, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are solid phones with interesting features that I think some users will really like. Those fussy about photography will appreciate the freedom of Photographic Styles, while creators will almost certainly love the ability to be able to create 4K 120fps content with just a phone. And even if you don't care for these things, surely you can appreciate the improved performance and battery life. That said, we will revisit these phones when the first wave of Apple Intelligence features becomes available and see if change and improve the user experience in any significant way.

The iPhone 16 Pro is a really nice smartphone for anybody who's already invested in Apple's ecosystem. Whether you're a Mac or iPad user that wants to start seamlessly connecting devices together, or someone like me who is heavily invested in the ecosystem and just in need of a phone upgrade, the iPhone 16 Pro is definitely top-notch. Its new A18 Pro SoC is super fast, the design is sleek and lightweight, the 120 Hz LTPO OLED display is gorgeous and bright, and the camera system is extremely versatile and capable. But most of that has been true for years. If you're already using an iPhone 14 Pro, it's an evolutionary upgrade. If you're on a 13 Pro, there's definitely enough here that would warrant a second look.

With the slight tweaks to screen size and battery life, the iPhone 16 Pro is a better phone than previous Pros. But slightly so. The changes in camera quality are there, but they are subtle, and it's the Photographic Style feature that might prove the most important one for the way your pictures look rather than any new camera. The faster processor only seems to matter for the most demanding gaming tasks and fast capture of ProRAW files, but we doubt you would notice the speed-up in daily use. And the Camera Control button might be one of the more over-hyped features around, especially when it comes to its trackpad-like features. And most importantly, the iPhone 16 Pro is just not a complete phone yet without all the Apple Intelligence feature coming later in 2024, and some even in 2025.

These aren't inexpensive phones, and while Apple is counting on its upcoming AI features to help sell them, the reality is that the iPhone 15 Pro will also support Apple Intelligence. More battery life and ever-so-slightly larger screens are welcome, and the same goes for the camera upgrades (though ironically the biggest leap is more in how you finesse Apple's computational photography, not so much the sensor changes and such). You'd be forgiven, though, if — after Apple's exceedingly smooth upgrade and data transfer process — you were left looking at your familiar home screen on your familiar-feeling new iPhone 16 Pro and wondering "wait, so what exactly is the big difference, here?"

The iPhone 16 Pro gets a bigger display and the 5x tetraprism zoom from the Max without a price hike. If you’re not a Pro, the regular iPhone 16 is truly great enough for nearly everyone, with nearly all the same features. But if you appreciate the differences, spend the extra $200 – $300, you’ll love the iPhone 16 Pro.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro have managed to find another level in a category where yearly upgrades are incremental at best. But Apple has still found several ways to innovate, and it cleverly put a lot of work into making the already excellent camera go to another level. And with Apple Intelligence just around the corner, we expect customers will be lining up to upgrade.

I hope I’ve been able to give you some guidance on whether you should choose an iPhone 16, an iPhone 16 Plus or to go with one of the more expensive Pro models. It really comes down to whether you need/want the high-end camera features of the more Pro variants, or demand a 120Hz display. If not, save yourself between $200 and $400 by getting one of the more affordable models. And I’m impressed enough with the AI capabilities in the iPhone 16 that you might even consider upgrading from its immediate predecessor — something that’s almost never true. If you stick with your iPhone 15, you’ll never get Apple Intelligence. Just something to think about.

Apple also claims the new A18 Pro chip is much more power efficient and will result in the iPhone 16 Pro Max having the longest battery life of any iPhone yet. We'll also challenge that claim with our own battery tests. The camera system upgrades to a 48 megapixel sensor for the ultrawide camera, which should result in better macro photos and a number of other improvements. We'll be testing that as well in a new set of ZDNET smartphone camera tests. The AI features that Apple mentioned this summer at WWDC, including the newly upgraded Siri, won't arrive until the iOS 18.1 update -- and even then, they'll still be in beta and some of the features won't come until iOS 18.2 or later. But when the AI features do finally arrive, Apple's new flagship supercomputer in your pocket looks like it's going to have the oomph to run them without breaking a sweat.

I’m currently testing the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series, and while you’ll have to wait for my full review next week as I put the new camera and battery through their paces, I already tell you about some of Apple’s winning features. This year’s iPhone upgrades offer bigger screens on the two Pros, a dedicated multi-function Camera Control on all four new iPhones, and up to four hours of additional battery life and faster charging. I’ve toyed around with Apple Intelligence in beta for several weeks, and while it’s not due to launch until iOS 18.1 in October, it promises a smarter Siri (finally), AI summaries of emails and notifications (so clutch) and AI photo-editing tools (magically erase those photo-bombers in the background).

My initial reaction to the new Pro iPhones is that they are even more of a professional tool. Choosing between the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max is a matter of prioritizing ergonomics over screen size and battery. Fresh off a screen size boost, the Pro is more appealing, if (still) far from the Max in terms of productivity and entertainment capabilities. The Max is also worth spending extra on for its longer battery life. But still, some might find the Max to be a tad too big, especially with a rugged case on. The iPhone 16 Pro starts at a dollar under $1,000 for a version with 128 GB of storage. The Max costs $200 more, but it comes with 256 GB of memory at minimum. Paying up for that much memory on the 16 Pro brings the price up $100, and closes the cost gap, leaving screen size and battery capacity as the only decisions to make before ordering.

If you have money to blow, I highly recommend the iPhone 16 Pro Max. I mean, we're talking about 25 hours of battery life here. As someone who is big on power efficiency, that alone is worth the price. Some are excited about 4K video capture at 120Hz, but the real star feature here is Audio Mix, which gives your videos a noticeable, studio-esque improvement in sound quality. So if you're a content creator who wants an edge over your competitors, this is the phone for you.

As a content creator and a photographer, I feel these new iPhones are tailor-made for me. I’ve seen people online saying that it’s not a huge upgrade from the 14 Pro, which sure, the 14 Pro is an amazing phone and offered a nice jump up in camera quality at the time and still has very capable photography optics. However, it’s still missing much of the pro software and video support that Apple has added over the past two generations. Things like LOG, Audio Mix, the Fusion camera and Camera Controls are game chargers for creators. I never want to use an iPhone without dedicated camera buttons again. Even for capturing behind-the-scenes footage, the iPhone 16 proves to be worth the upgrade.

So that is the iPhone 16 Pro… so far. As it exists today, it’s a remarkably iterative update to the iPhone 15 Pro — it’s hard to find reasons to upgrade from last year’s model. And I’m not at all convinced that it’s worth upgrading to the 16 Pro from older Pro models just yet, either — the Camera Control button and Action Button are nice but not game-changing, and unless you’re excited about dialing in the new Photographic Styles and the new tone control, you might find the even brighter and flatter photos to actually be a step backward in photo processing. If you can’t tell, I am personally thrilled by the tone control, so this is an easy choice for me, but it feels like it’s worth waiting a tick for everyone else.

The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max have everything we've come to expect in a year-over-year upgrade. Even without Apple Intelligence, the 6.3-inch iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max have a slew of upgrades including a good battery life, outstanding photo and video chops and iOS 18. And the negatives are as thin as the borders around the larger screens: You only get 128GB of storage for a grand, plus drab color options and a new camera button that might get accidentally tapped. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are excellent phones worthy of a spot in your pocket -- if you can afford them.

Apple called the new A18 Pro chip as powerful as high-end desktop PCs, which sounds like hyperbole, but the above features are convincing enough to make me think it may be at least as powerful as high-end desktops from a couple of years ago. When we get our testing devices, we'll run benchmarks and put the phones through some real-world scenarios to measure and compare the performance. Apple also claims the new A18 Pro chip is much more power efficient and will result in the iPhone 16 Pro Max having the longest battery life of any iPhone yet. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max both look like solid upgrades, but the iPhone 16 Pro could be the better value. You get the same 5x telephoto zoom as the larger Pro Max in a smaller design, and the screen is big enough where you might not have Max envy. I personally prefer a larger screen and the longest battery life, so I would probably go for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. But if you're on a tighter budget go regular Pro. Like most years, you really can’t go wrong with any iPhone model. Regular phone users will be able to get better photos, longer battery life and cool pro-ish features like the Action Button and Camera Control with this year’s 16 models. Pros who use their phones for content capture, shooting short films, and taking high-end photos will be able to get even more out of the Pro iPhones, and people who don’t want a larger phone will definitely be happier to know that both the 16 Pro and Pro Max now have identical camera systems.

Running from the Apple Keynote to the expansive demo room right behind it, I was confronted by long tables of new products, including iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max phones on pedestals (as they should be), and hoards of excited media and analysts who crowded so tightly around the products that I could scarcely get close enough to sniff them. Lucky for me, many Apple representatives were milling about who would almost surreptitiously remove the gleaming handsets from their pockets and then just as casually walk you through features. That was how I finally got close to the iPhone 16 Pro, a now 6.3-inch iOS 18 device that is slightly larger than the iPhone 15 Pro while offering noticeably more screen real estate. Apple managed this trick by shrinking the bezel so it's just a thin dark line surrounding the Super Retina XDR display. Apparently, Apple figured out how to reroute some of the screen traces from the edges to underneath the display, which made the razor-thin bezel possible.Length 3

Tech giant Apple put new artificial intelligence (AI) features to the front and centre when it unveiled its four new iPhones that it said are designed from the ground up to take advantage of the technology. With its bigger screen size, slightly bigger battery, upgraded cameras, faster MagSafe and, most importantly, new AI features, the iPhone 16 Pro shapes up like a big upgrade. Maybe even the biggest in the iPhone 16 family. It might not be a ground-breaking change, but it's improving the fundamental elements of the smartphone experience and that matters. If you own anything older than the 15 Pro, you might be tempted by Apple Intelligence alone, but keep in mind that those AI features will be rolling out slowly. But still, this seems like a good moment to upgrade, as Apple itself mentioned some good trade-in deals in store. And what does the future hold? Well, rumors say we will get a big iPhone 17 Pro redesign in 2025, so if you want an iPhone that actually looks different, well, you'd have to wait another year.

Lastly, what I noticed about the keynote was less emphasis on generative AI for photos and even fairly conservative use of AI for things like summarizing information from emails or messages or using Siri as a more powerful personal assistant. It’s worth noting that as of the writing of this article, the majority of these new AI-based tools have not yet been released and will be given with future updates. A young man leans on a table with his right hand touching his cheek, wearing a beige coat. The image is repeated four times with different color filters: black and white, blue, cyan, and green backgrounds. The only real use of generative AI in photography seems to be for making custom emojis and stickers or for erasing unwanted subjects in the backgrounds of images.

Commentaire
