The iPhone 14 is a very moderate update to an already excellent phone. In previous years it might even have been called the iPhone 13S. There’s very little reason to update if you’ve got an iPhone 13, though you will notice numerous benefits if you’re coming from an older model. It’s also worth waiting a little longer to see what’s new with the iPhone 15, especially if it does indeed pack new features such as Dynamic Island, USB-C charging and the A16 Bionic chip. That said, the iPhone 14 is still a great phone, just as long as it gets a price cut to reflect its slightly outdated specs. The camera remains excellent for both photography and videography; the software is top-drawer and the addition of lots of safety features is smart. The battery life is fantastic for a phone of this size, too. If you can afford the extra, I would thoroughly recommend going for the iPhone 14 Pro.

Let’s be straightforward – this is an iPhone 13S in all but name and it’s hard to think of another annual iPhone update that’s added less ‘new’ to the package. There are a few enhancements such as the cameras and slight battery size increase, but it’s nothing to set the cat among the pigeons (this would have been the ideal time for Apple to move to USB-C as it surely has to in 2023 because of incoming EU legislation). After three years, surely Apple will have to change the design of the iPhone 15; expect the Pro’s Dynamic Island feature to drip down for starters. We think it’s only a must-upgrade if you’re on an iPhone 11 or earlier as the difference will be significant from those models. From 12 and 13? Not at all. There is, of course, the argument that you might be better off trying to find a cheaper iPhone 13 instead of the 14.

Despite some positive signs, it doesn’t look good for the iPhone 14. Here is a phone that, aside from its cameras and slightly better battery life, doesn’t really move things on from the iPhone 13 (£649) in any significant way. The design is the same as last year, the performance is the same and the screen hasn’t moved on, either. An £779 phone with a 60Hz display in 2022 isn’t a good look, and amidst all this, the price has risen by £70, putting the basic 128GB model up to a whopping £849. This, ultimately, puts the iPhone 14 in a rather awkward position. On the one hand, it’s worse value than the one-year-old iPhone 13 (which is still on sale, by the way) and, on the other, it suffers by comparison to similarly priced and cheaper Android handsets. It’s not often that I say this of an Apple smartphone but the iPhone 14 is not an Apple handset you should buy.

The iPhone 14 is the best iPhone for most people, but despite that, it’s not that exciting. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max get the biggest upgrades this year, including always-on displays, a clever replacement for the notch and a 48MP main camera. Still, there’s a lot to like for $799. The iPhone 14 delivers fantastic-looking photos and video; the display is stellar; and you get performance that still beats the best Android phones — except for the new Galaxy S23. (Be sure to check out our Galaxy S23 vs. iPhone 14 face-off for more details.) Action mode is another plus if you’re looking for super smooth video. Plus Apple may be offering easier access to repairs for this generation, giving the iPhone 14 a surprise advantage over the iPhone 13.

Even though Apple's decisions are always debatable, as a rule, the company's decisions are understandable. In 2022, however, I have to scratch my head when I look over my notes about the iPhone 14. For $799, the company introduces a new model that only differs in details from the predecessor model, which now costs just under $800. There are not even any optical changes, which could be used to justify the purchase out of a kind of cult feeling. Apple's iPhone 14 is a statement towards the Pro series, which, however, costs another $200 more. Thus, Apple's most loyal customers are faced with a difficult decision, which I can only help with as a technology journalist: If you use an iPhone 13, you can skip this iPhone generation—or buy the Pro model. If you are using an older iPhone, you should wait for the iPhone 15—or buy the Pro model.

If you are using an older iPhone, you should wait for the iPhone 15—or buy the Pro model. If you want to buy an iPhone for the first time... you should buy the iPhone 13—or the iPhone 14 Pro. It seems as if Apple sacrifices its most popular iPhone model in order to focus more on the Pro models. Because this is where the real innovations are, and this was already apparent last year. With the attention to detail and sophistication because of which most people buy an iPhone in the first place.

For scoring and analysis, DXOMARK engineers capture and evaluate more than 1,500 test images both in controlled lab environments and in outdoor, indoor and low-light natural scenes, using the front camera’s default settings. The photo protocol is designed to take into account the user’s needs and is based on typical shooting scenarios, such as close-up and group selfies. The evaluation is performed by visually inspecting images against a reference of natural scenes, and by running objective measurements on images of charts captured in the lab under different lighting conditions from 1 to 1,000+ lux and color temperatures from 2,300K to 6,500K. For more information about the DXOMARK Selfie test protocol, click here. More details on how we score smartphone cameras are available here. Outside of Apple’s core following, the iPhone 14 is a tough handset to recommend to a wider audience. While iOS 16 and several small hardware improvements make this the best vanilla iPhone flagship ever made, Apple is either oblivious to or simply doesn’t care to compete with the broader smartphone market. Perhaps the brand simply knows the phone will sell regardless, or maybe it’s waiting to make a bigger jump next year? Either way, this is definitely the most incremental upgrade to the already stale iPhone formula to date. While slow and steady is par for the course at a lot of phone brands, there’s long been room for improvement with certain aspects of the standard iPhone. Apple’s lack of engagement with these issues finally sees the handset slip far enough behind the competition that it shouldn’t be overlooked. Mediocre charging capabilities, lack of pixel-binning camera upgrades, and a 60Hz display are not just last-gen, they’re two or even three generations behind the competition. The iPhone 14 also misses out on many of Apple’s latest features you’ll find on the iPhone 14 Pro ($999.99 at Best Buy), including Dynamic Island, always-on display functionality, and the more powerful A16 Bionic processor, setting up a major division between Pro models and the rest.

The iPhone 14 is a very moderate update to an already excellent phone. In previous years it might even have been called the iPhone 13S. There’s very little reason to update if you’ve got an iPhone 13, though you will notice numerous benefits if you’re coming from an older model. The lack of an updated chipset shouldn’t be a cause for concern as performance remains excellent, but the reluctance to move away from a 60Hz display is a little disappointing. Still, the camera is excellent for both photography and videography; the software is top-drawer and the addition of lots of safety features is smart. The battery life is fantastic for a phone of this size, too. If you can afford the extra, I would thoroughly recommend going for the iPhone 14 Pro. It has a far better screen, a more versatile camera and clever tricks like the always-on display and Dynamic Island. This really is the year that the Pro is the way to go if you’re due an upgrade.

I tried to look past the iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14 comparison and judged the new smartphone on its own performance. And to my surprise, in my day-to-day usage, nothing about the smartphone actually felt dated. The design, which many may call a replica of iPhone 13 is iconic and lack of change did not bother me. Further, from performance to display capabilities, nothing really felt short or left a lot of room for complaint. And we have to say that if you are a shutterbug, you can find more value in the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Google Pixel 7. But with that being said, if you are already an iPhone 13 user, you will not get a massive upgrade for switching, and we would not recommend it. For anyone else, switching to the iPhone 14 definitely gives you a big camera upgrade, a smaller notch, a bunch of minor new features and more years of iOS support. And of course, you get the reliability and efficiency that comes with owning an iPhone.

We're at a point where there isn't much you can do to make a premium phone significantly better than its own predecessor, but even so the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus left me somewhat underwhelmed. In a nutshell, the iPhone 14 is Apple's least significant update yet, and that's because the company has locked itself into a pricing strategy that prevents Pro features trickling down. At least this model isn't more expensive than its predecessor, so you're still getting something a bit better at the same price. The iPhone 14 Plus does have some novelty value and excellent battery life going for it, but it's far more expensive than competing Android devices. It might tempt anyone with an iPhone X or older to upgrade and it might be exactly what some people are looking for. Since you aren't getting Pro features either way, it seems that you really won't lose much if you choose to buy last year's iPhone 13 instead of the current generation. Nearly all the things that make the iPhone 14 good apply to its predecessor as well. You could save Rs. 10,000 (or more when offers are factored in) and you'd get pretty much the same device, just with a bit less RAM and slightly weaker cameras. The only reasons to choose an iPhone 14 over an iPhone 13, especially in India, would be if camera quality is absolutely critical, you anticipate needing crash detection in the future, or you don't mind spending more money now to maximise usability and resale value many years down the line. Rumours are already circulating about next year's iPhones, and it's likely that they'll have a minor design refresh including the Dynamic Island. Apple is also due to replace its Lightning port with USB Type-C. If those sound like features worth waiting for, you can quite easily skip the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

That’s the iPhone 14. Its cameras are nicer, it’s slightly better with demanding games, and it has a couple of impressive safety features that you’ll (hopefully) never have to use. But they’re there just in case. I totally understand why some people have dismissed the iPhone 14 as an ‘iPhone 13S’ and as a device you should ignore. But it’s the last part I disagree with. If you already have an iPhone 13 and don’t see any reason to upgrade, that’s probably the right call. But if you have an iPhone XR, iPhone 11, or even the iPhone 12, the iPhone 14 is a phone I’m more than happy to recommend. If you don’t care about the Dynamic Island, 120Hz refresh rates, or a telephoto camera, the iPhone 14 is hands-down the best iPhone you can buy today. Even if it’s a little boring.

We put the Apple iPhone 14 through our rigorous DXOMARK Camera test suite to measure its performance in photo, video, and zoom quality from an end-user perspective. This article breaks down how the device fared in a variety of tests and several common use cases and is intended to highlight the most important results of our testing with an extract of the captured data. Just like the flagships iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, the iPhone 14 proved to be an extremely reliable camera in our testing, producing repeatable image and video results in all conditions. It particularly shined in video, thanks to high levels of detail, as well as excellent autofocus tracking. The camera lagged slightly behind the Pro version in terms of zoom performance, though. This was mainly due to the lack of a dedicated lens and a smaller maximum aperture on the ultra-wide module. With only a 5x digital zoom, overall zoom capabilities are quite limited, especially at medium and long range.

The iPhone 14 can’t be called a major upgrade, but for some, better cameras are always a reason to switch phones. For most others, with either an iPhone 13 or iPhone 12, there’s not much else to be gained, unless you find that the SOS feature, for example, is yet another reason to switch to the iPhone 14. Which is a little faster, a little better and a lot more expensive than its predecessor. So still a very good phone, which is still faster than the competition, but unfortunately a lot more expensive.

One suspects if Apple did this intentionally to create more separation between the Pro and regular iPhones, because the Pro iPhones got even more “Pro” this year with their new always-on display, Dynamic Island, A16 Bionic chip, and improved 48-megapixel main camera – all the things the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus did not get. It’s a bit tragic because the iPhone 14 and 14 PLus are not bad phones at all. Build quality is great, their displays are nice to look at, performance is class-leading, and their cameras mostly take very pleasant photos. But they just don’t offer enough to differentiate themselves from last year’s iPhones. If anything, it just goes to show just how good the iPhone 13 series was.

While we feel that the iPhone 14 is the right size for most people — making the good compromise between a screen that is big enough on a device that's not too much to handle, the iPhone 14 Plus will definitely have its niche. It's meant for the small subset of fans that demand that larger battery and probably enjoy a ton of media on their smartphone — be it gaming or video. Surely, devout Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ subscribers will find value in the large-screened iPhone 14 Plus that doesn't cost as much as a Pro Max. If you don't see yourself as someone who spends a ton of time staring at a phone screen, you will most probably be just fine with the iPhone 14 and its more easily pocketable size.

The Apple iPhone 14 showed very similar behavior compared with the iPhone 13, but its global score was slightly below its predecessor. The autonomy was average despite its small battery, which means that the device is well-optimized. Indeed, the discharge currents were very low across all our use cases. However, in terms of autonomy, the device struggled when gaming, calling, and using the camera. The charging experience was poor, taking almost 2 hours to fill up the battery with the 20W wired charger, and almost 3 hours with the 15W wireless charger. The autonomy recovered after a 5-minute charge was only 2 hours and 46 minutes on average, which was far from the average of our database. The charge efficiency was very low, too, the lowest in our database to date. However, the residual consumption of both wired and wireless chargers was well-controlled, with very low power. Compared with devices from the same Premium price range ($600 – $799), the iPhone 14’s global score is above-average thanks to decent autonomy and very good efficiency. But the charging score remains very low.

If you’re running an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, the iPhone 14 – while similar looking on the outside – is a massively significant update. The camera is dramatically improved, its 5G modem is significantly faster and less power hungry, the battery life is superb, and its overall performance is around 40% better than the iPhone 12. Apple has kept the price of its iPhone 14 competitive, meaning the same as the iPhone 13’s, and it has made adjustments and tweaks in all the right areas which when combined make it a serious force to be reckoned with. If you’re running an iPhone 13, this isn’t one for you though. Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro is a different story.

Don’t fall for the iPhone 14 being ‘boring’ talk as if you are upgrading from an older iPhone — XR or iPhone 11 — this is an excellent upgrade. Even for iPhone 12 users, the performance, cameras and battery will seem much, much better. Most people these days end up keeping an iPhone for a minimum of three years. If you have passed that three or four year mark, the iPhone 14 is a superb phone that offers a lot of value. The performance is great, the cameras have been improved quite a bit and it is a pretty well-designed iPhone. In fact, we would say that the iPhone 14 — those who don’t want big phones — offer the best value you can find in an new iPhone. At Rs 79,990, this is the most affordable new iPhone one can buy. You can, of course, always go for the Pro models if budget is not a constraint. Apple has comfortably got a winner on its hands in the form of iPhone 14 and so will you if you end up buying it. If the iPhone is a tote bag with cameras then it's pretty darn good one.

The iPhone 14 replaces the iPhone 13 in Apple’s line-up and is still the default iPhone choice for most people. It has very good cameras, outstanding battery life, and a great, if 60Hz, display. It’s not too large like the iPhone Plus and Max models are, and it isn’t a lead weight in a pocket or bag. I also prefer the aluminium sides of the iPhone 14 to the glossy sides of the Pro iPhones that pick up greasy fingerprints. Add in full waterproofing, wireless charging, and top software support, and you have an iPhone that will last you for four or five years. It’s just very similar to the iPhone 13, and for this price should have a high refresh rate display and the ability to shoot in RAW format so people can use the camera as a professional tool.

I'm not saying the iPhone 14 is bad and you shouldn't buy it – I'll need more time to test and ascertain its capabilities and value proposition– but it seems like I’m not alone in thinking that the updates to the iPhone 14 were mostly underwhelming. Prominent Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently wrote that pre-order sales of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have been disappointing and trail even the iPhone SE and iPhone 13 Mini. And once you start looking at prices, you have to wonder if the now-discontinued iPhone 13 Pro isn’t better value. They are not difficult to find and cost about the same as an iPhone 14. Prices of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will start at S$1,299 and S$1,499 respectively. And here's how they compare against the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

With a price starting at $799 (128GB), the iPhone 14 brings some of the camera goodness of the iPhone 13 Pro, without the “pro” features such as telephoto and lidar. Still, the iPhone 14 camera is better than the iPhone 13 ($699), which might justify the $100 price difference if the budget is not too tight. If you can find a deal on the iPhone 13 Pro and buy it at around $899, it would be a better choice, in our opinion. And if you are hesitating between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, we can tell you that, without a doubt, the iPhone 14 Pro is more than worth the $200 difference with the iPhone 14. If you own an iPhone 13, jump to the iPhone 14 Pro or wait for next year. Anyone with an iPhone 12 or below will find the iPhone 14 (and beyond) a nice upgrade.

The iPhone 14 is the most incremental upgrade ever if looked at from the lens of year-on-year improvements. You can even say Apple took the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” a bit too seriously with the iPhone 14, because it practically is an iPhone 13, which in itself was a small bump up from the iPhone 12. But for someone coming from an iPhone 11 or iPhone XS, it’s a worthwhile upgrade as there are many notable improvements and refinements in store that they will definitely notice and appreciate. This is to say that the iPhone 14 is a good product, but the iPhone 13 was almost equally good as well. The bottom line is that the iPhone 14 plays it way too safe, and that makes the Pro models even more appealing and stand out options this year. Dynamic Island, a brand new 48MP camera, and the A16 chipset are all reserved for the iPhone 14 Pro lineup. Apple’s decision to once again go with a 60Hz is hard to swallow, especially considering pretty much every OEM has now switched to a higher refresh rate panel. In fact, the iPhone 14 is the only smartphone at this price point with a standard 60Hz panel.

The iPhone 14 is the best smartphone you don’t need. It’s brilliant in almost every way, but it’s the definition of incremental update. Anyone with an iPhone 13 is likely to be happy getting iOS 16 and waiting until next year when we could see a bigger overhaul of the design or processor. And due to the similarities with last year’s phone (which is still available) will anyone really want to spend the extra £100 for the latest one? Users of the older iPhone XR or iPhone 11 may be looking to upgrade, but they can also save some money by going for the iPhone 13 or the new iPhone SE. If you can get a great iPhone 14 contract deal and want a model from the latest line-up you won’t be disappointed, but if you can afford the extra £250 we recommend checking out the iPhone 14 Pro as it gives you better features, cameras and battery life.

As an iPhone 13 mini user, I don’t see a genuine reason to upgrade to the iPhone 14 until people like myself change their minds and want a bigger-screen phone. Even if you are an iPhone 12 or 13 user, you won’t see a big difference since there aren’t many changes. I think a lot of users who are still using an iPhone 11 or older iPhone might see a lot of value in the iPhone 14. It’s still a great smartphone with faster performance, longer battery life, better cameras, 5G support, and increased durability and cameras. The iPhone 14 is a more mainstream smartphone and is made to appeal to a wide user base.

Let’s be straightforward – this is an iPhone 13S in all but name and it’s hard to think of another annual iPhone update that’s added less ‘new’ to the package. There are a few enhancements such as the cameras and slight battery size increase, but it’s nothing to set the cat among the pigeons (this would have been the ideal time for Apple to move to USB-C as it surely has to next year because of incoming EU legislation). Mind you, all of those quite reasonable caveats don’t alter the key point – the iPhone 14 is a brilliant and highly capable phone that’s a formidable tool for anyone.

The iPhone 14 is an anomaly in the history of Apple’s smartphones. There have been plenty of instances when the yearly iPhone iteration has been uncannily similar to the previous year’s model, but it's never been this close. And even those previous models that have promised no picture and sound upgrades over their predecessors have often contained surprise, subtle improvements. The iPhone 14 does not follow this path: its AV performance is essentially identical to that of the iPhone 13. We're not going to be too harsh on the iPhone 14 as it is truly a five-star device; both the picture and audio are thoroughly brilliant, but the fact that the iPhone 13 remains on Apple’s roster makes the 14 a harder sell if media consumption is your main priority. That said, if you want the awesome picture and sound quality of last year with an even better camera, the iPhone 14 still makes perfect sense.

Google's Pixel 6 is an excellent alternative at $599, as is the Galaxy S22 at $799. The Pixel has the same camera limitations as the iPhone 14, but offers the best Android software experience. The Galaxy S22 offers more flexible cameras, but equally fine hardware and performance. The Pixel 7 family, due in early October, is right around the corner and will replace the Pixel 6. While the iPhone 14 doesn't offer all of the innovative new features available to the Pro line, Apple has made plenty of small tweaks under the hood to boost its performance and keep it competitive.

The differences between the iPhone models when it comes to audio playback and recording have usually been minimal. The same holds true now with the release of the iPhone 14 series. The iPhone 14, which contains the A15 Bionic chipset, shares many of the hardware specs as the 14 Pro Max, which operates on the latest A16 Bionic chip. Our testers found that in Playback, the iPhone 14’s timbre has a richer midrange than the 14 Pro Max, but the 14’s high-end extension doesn’t reach that of the 14 Pro Max. Dynamics-wise, the other minor difference between the two models is that the iPhone 14’s sound is less impactful than the 14 Pro Max. In Recording, the testers noticed very slight timbre variations between the models. The iPhone 14’s loudness was also slightly better than that of the 14 Pro Max. Wind noise reduction on the iPhone 14 was slightly better managed than on the more advanced model. The audio zoom isn’t a strong point on both models.

The iPhone 14 is very much a familiar affair. It is an incremental upgrade over last year's model. If you didn't have time to go through the entire review, allow us to list all of the upgrades really quicky. The iPhone 14 has a major internal redesign that makes it more easily repairable, particularly a back panel or a display swap is now much less of a pain. The iPhone 14 has only a slightly larger battery pack but notably better battery life and even faster charging. The chipset is last year's A15 Bionic, but with five GPU cores, 6GB of RAM (50% more), Bluetooth 5.3, a more energy-efficient Qualcomm 5G modem, new satellite connectivity for SOS messages and new Crash Detection. The camera department has a new larger 12MP main camera with a 1/1.65" sensor, 1.9-micron pixels, a new 12MP ultrawide and a new 12MP, f/1.9 selfie camera now with autofocus onboard. There is also the new Action Mode video stabilization, 4K Cinematic mode at 30 fps and a new Photonic Engine for better low-light photos. It's not an insignificant list of changes once you really dig in.

The Apple iPhone 14 plays it safe, both in its design and hardware, and that makes the iPhone 14 Pro the more attractive option this year than it may have been in previous years. There are of course some upgrades - you get an improved main camera, an upgraded front camera and a slight battery increase compared to the iPhone 13. The design is identical though and there's not a huge jump in performance either and while that's still a great design and solid performance, this year more than any in the past, there's a much stronger argument to buy the iPhone 14 Pro model.

If you love Apple’s straight-edged, aluminum design and flat display (as some of our colleagues do), then the iPhone 14 looks and feels as good as ever. It’s basically unchanged, though it’s 0.1mm thicker and 2g lighter than its predecessor. At a very reasonable 6.1 inches in size, it’s one of the more usable phones in one hand. Apple has completely redesigned the phone’s internals, though, making it easier to repair by allowing you to remove both the front and the back. Chalk that up as another win for the growing right-to-repair movement. Speaking of internals, there’s dual-SIM (eSIM and physical) support onboard for most of the world, but we’re looking at dual-eSIM only for models sold in the US. Depending on your carrier, moving from physical to eSIM might be painless, or it could be a headache — my US-based colleagues had mixed results on Verizon when attempting the online process but got it all sorted in a store. Either way, this isn’t really a pro or con for the handset, but it’s one area where the iPhone 14 is actually ahead of the curve as the industry slowly moves away from physical SIMs.

The iPhone 14 is not for people who already have the iPhone 13. And Apple knows that. The iPhone 13 is already a really good phone and now, with the price drop, it is an even better deal. But, people who are still using some of the old iPhone models, say the iPhone 11 or the iPhone XR, should definitely go for the iPhone 14. Now, you may ask why not go for the iPhone 13 instead? Well, that's because the iPhone 13 is already more than a year old. In the world of iPhones, the way it works is like this: Get the latest iPhone you can afford. Use it for four years. Then get the latest iPhone you can afford. If you buy the older gen iPhone, you will have to upgrade a year sooner. So, in the end it works out the same. The iPhone 14 starts at a price of Rs 79,900 in India but Apple is offering a Rs 6,000 instant discount to consumers shopping with an HDFC credit card. That brings down the price of Rs 73,900. At this price, I feel the iPhone 14 offers a lot of value to users upgrading from a phone like iPhone XR or older, or from a mainstream Android phone.

You might think of the iPhone 14 as the honorary 'iPhone 13S', as the upgrades over its predecessor – while certainly welcome – aren't major. That said, with shiny new iOS 16 software, a reliable and familiar build, and pretty much everything in its right place, this smaller-screen iPhone is still a mighty attractive prospect – although I, and I'm sure many others, will be more smitten by the prospect of the iPhone 14 Pro.

I’m not particularly blown away by the iPhone 14, but I don’t think that was Apple’s intent. This was meant to be an incremental upgrade, however, in some aspects, the iPhone 14 was a slight downgrade, especially when it comes to battery life. With that said, depending on your lifestyle, you may benefit from owning the iPhone 14. For example, if you’re a travel vlogger who loathes lugging around a gimbal, you may appreciate the Action Mode feature, which will stabilize your videos, whether you’re navigating through crowded, tight places in Mykonos or enduring a bumpy airboat ride on an alligator swamp tour. Or perhaps you’re concerned about your safety — or a loved one’s safety — and crash detection and satellite connectivity gives you a piece of mind. Fortunately, I haven’t had a chance to test the former and Emergency SOS via satellite doesn’t come to iPhone until November, but if these features put your mind at ease, there’s no harm in upgrading to the iPhone 14. Other than that, an upgrade to the iPhone 14 may not be worth it (unless you have the Galaxy S22 because the battery life on that thing is horrendous).

“It’s just another iPhone.” That’s how I’ve heard a lot of people refer to the iPhone 14 — and for good reason. Compared to last year’s model, the iPhone 14 is a very familiar smartphone. It has the same design, screen, chipset, and a very similar camera system. But here’s the thing. Those similarities shouldn’t come as a disappointment. The iPhone 14 takes a very strong foundation, keeps what works, and adds a few subtle improvements that make it a better overall handset. It’s far from the year’s most invigorating or jaw-dropping release, but if what you’re in the market for is “just another iPhone,” the iPhone 14 makes a great case for itself.

The iPhone 14 has a package virtue going for it - a compact 6.1" design coupled with the fastest mobile processor this side of the iPhone 14 Pro models. You can, however, use any Apple A15 or even A14-powered vessel to carry all your new iOS 16 features. In fact, a switch to the iPhone 14 would be worth it only if you are coming from something like the 5G-deprived iPhone 11, otherwise you'd better score a pretty good iPhone 14 deal if you are mulling over an upgrade. Slightly faster chipset and connectivity options, a tad better low-light camera performance, autofocus in the selfie snapper, and a bit longer battery life in some scenarios... really, Apple? All in all, for newcomers to the iOS universe the iPhone 14 would be enticing as the cheapest 2022 iPhone model with the new Crash Detection feature that may be helpful during accidents, but that's about it. For all other intents, better get the iPhone 14 Pro as Apple made a deliberate effort to offer way more value than the $200 price difference commands.

Apple added a number of safety tools to the 14 including Crash Detection and satellite connectivity for sending emergency messages when you're out of range of a cell tower. The iPhone 14 also got an internal redesign that helps dissipate heat better and allows its glass back to be repaired more easily and for less money. But these are features most people will hopefully never use and they're largely invisible. Even the iPhone's move away from physical SIM cards to eSIM on US models is something most people will only deal with once when transferring their number.

What's worth noting are the pricing changes to older iPhone models officially offered by Apple. All the details are here, but the short of it is that the older iPhone 13 Pro is no longer offered (likely because the iPhone 14 series inherited its chipset and camera), while the rest of the range is S$150 cheaper than its previous official prices. Also, you can still get an older but smaller iPhone 13 Mini, if you really missed the compact form factor. We hope this buying guide clarifies what iPhone 14 model is best suited for your needs. That's not to say the iPhone 14 is disappointing. More a reflection that last year's iPhone is still competitive, and that the considerations around price feel more relevant at this point in the market versus those considering splashing out on an iPhone 14 Pro. Honestly, I look at Apple's 2022 iPhone family and I can't help but have flashbacks to 2017. Like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus five years ago, the iPhone 14 is a perfectly satisfactory refinement of what we've already seen. Problem is, it arrives alongside Apple's vision of what comes next and, while the iPhone 14 Pro doesn't upend the familiar in quite as extreme a way as the iPhone X did, you definitely get the sense that we're seeing another inflection point in the smartphone's history. Whether you care about which side of that you fall upon now comes down to your budget and your appetite for the bleeding edge. Apple has made another solid smartphone, but it's no stretch to say the iPhone 14 is the least fascinating of 2022's models. For a lot of people, that's entirely what they're looking for in a relatively affordable phone, but I couldn't say I'd be surprised if your eye was caught by the fancier features debuting on the iPhone 14 Pro.

This latest phone gets some clever and possibly life-saving new features, including sending texts to emergency services when you don't have any phone signal or are unconscious after a car crash. It's also slightly more powerful than last year's handset (we had no issues with the performance in our iPhone 13 review) and features improved rear and selfie cameras. Plus, there's still some epic battery life and that tough Ceramic Sheild technology to protect against broken screens. Looking through that list, it's clear these are all solid features ...but we still can't help feeling a little bit underwhelmed. The iPhone 14's display remains stuck at 60Hz, which doesn't offer the same silky smooth scrolling found on 120Hz high refresh-rate screens. It also lacks any of the blockbuster upgrades found on the iPhone 14 Pro, which arrives with a redesigned notch that boosts multi-tasking, a 48-megapixel camera, a new A16 Bionic chip, a telephoto lens for lossless 3x zoom in your photos, and an always-on screen. But despite the smaller list of improvements for the iPhone 14, it's still more expensive than ever, with prices starting from a pretty hefty £849 for the standard 128GB model – that price rises to over £1,170 for anyone wanting the 512GB version. Ouch. If you want this phone, you'll need to make sure you hunt out the best iPhone 14 deals. Don't get us wrong, this is still a great smartphone that offers oodles of power, a tough design that's built to last, and a fuss-free camera that snaps great images no matter how much of an amateur photographer you are. It's just a shame that it feels identical to the (now much cheaper) iPhone 13. In fact, it even looks pretty similar to the iPhone 12. That said, having the iPhone 14 in your pocket might just save your life and that could be enough to convince many to make the switch.

Although the iPhone 14 isn’t drastically different than the iPhone 13, it’s still a compelling smartphone that delivers outstanding performance, packs better-than-average cameras, and offers users a smooth and seamless software experience. Its new safety features separate it from the competition as well. I think if you’re currently using an iPhone 8, iPhone X, or iPhone XR, you’ll be glad you upgraded. For those looking for a more powerful camera system for capturing images and recording ultra high-resolution video, I recommend opting for the $999 iPhone 14 Pro, which has an additional lens, a whopping 48MP main camera, and a 1TB storage option. Most users will be better off saving the cash and opting for the iPhone 14 or 14 Plus, which still both deliver stellar performance and impressive image quality all while stretching your dollar further. The 14 Plus, which costs $100 more than the iPhone 14, is a good choice for folks who want a bigger display and bump in battery life, but it’s a little harder to hold one-handed. Just know that the iPhone 14 Plus won’t be available until October 7 — a whole three weeks after the iPhone 14 comes out.

Most people should consider other options, but there is an argument for the iPhone 14 if you meet a narrow set of criteria: you’re on an iPhone 12 or older, you really want the satellite SOS feature, you prefer a 6.1-inch screen size (it is, after all, the right one), you want the best camera quality at this price point, you just need a new phone right now, and your carrier is offering a sweet trade-in deal. For this particular set of circumstances, the iPhone 14 will suit you just fine. Otherwise, it’s well worth taking a look at your other options. When you shift to new technologies in a product line, you have to put a stake in the ground somewhere: one product will be The New Thing, and another will be old. The 14 is on the “old” side of that dividing line. The “old” was good, and so is the iPhone 14. But in the broader landscape of good phones you can buy right now — iOS or otherwise — it’s hard to see an argument for the 14.

There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the iPhone 14. It's a solid smartphone at a reasonable price that's capable of snapping excellent photos. Unfortunately, this year Apple seems intent on putting a bit of space between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro feature-wise, dropping the A16 from the base-level device and opting not to bring the new Dynamic Island to the smartphone. The iPhone 14 is also strikingly similar to the iPhone 13, save for a few minor camera upgrades. Still, even with its shortcomings, the iPhone 14 is a formidable device. That said, those already rocking an iPhone 13 will find little reason to upgrade this year, but if you're still using an iPhone 11 or earlier, now could be a great time to pull the trigger on a new smartphone.

You’ll notice a bigger difference if you’re going to the iPhone 14 from the 11 or older, since new features like Emergency SOS via Satellite and crash detection are hopefully things you won’t need to use much. The best iPhone 14 model is obviously going to vary from person to person. But generally speaking, the standard iPhone 14 appears to offer a good balance of performance and price. It's also the logical upgrade for any iPhone mini owners, as it's the smallest device in the new lineup. The iPhone 14 Plus looks to be a good value for fans of large phones who don't need the extra features of the Pro Max. Of course, power users should opt for the Pro or Pro Max to get the new A16 chip, always-on display, Display Island, and better cameras.

Given the incremental improvements made by the iPhone 13 led us to declare the 13 Pro to be our pick of last year’s crop, the iPhone 14’s lack of major innovation isn’t a good look. The satellite SOS is a neat addition and improvements to the cameras are never a bad thing, but is it enough? With the new crop of Apple smartphones, there will inevitably come better deals to be had on the previous generation, and right now, it’s difficult to see how the iPhone 14 can offer greater value for money than a discounted iPhone 13 Pro. We’ll have a better idea of the nitty-gritty when we get our hands on a review sample, so be sure to check back soon for our full verdict of the iPhone 14 series, and see which one we think is the best bet.

The Apple iPhone 14 is a flagship that holds onto an aging, well-worn design and serves up some technical improvements, including a more powerful TrueDepth camera array, crash detection, satellite communications, and more to split the difference between budget-conscious and the next big thing.

Clearly, there are a lot of new iPhones to shop from, and each one offers a feature or two that the others do not. My ultimate buying advice is this: Visit your local Apple store and give each model a test drive. Run your most frequented apps, take pictures and videos, and get a feel for each phone's fit and finish. Naturally, your preferences will narrow down the options and allow you to choose the best iPhone for you.

It's worth noting that US models of the iPhone 14 will no longer have a physical SIM card slot, though this wasn't something I was very bothered by. If you're already keen to get an iPhone 14 or 14 Plus before we can put it through its paces, you can pre-order one on September 9th starting at $799. The iPhone 14 will be available from September 16th, while the Plus will only be ready come October 7th.

The iPhone 14 has a package virtue going for it - a compact 6.1" design coupled with the fastest mobile processor this side of the iPhone 14 Pro models. You can, however, use any Apple A15 or even A14-powered vessel to carry your new iOS 16 features. In fact, an upgrade to the iPhone 14 would be worth it only if you are coming from something like the 5G-deprived iPhone 11, otherwise you'd better score a pretty good iPhone 14 deal if you are mulling over an upgrade. Slightly faster chipset and connectivity options, autofocus in the front camera and a tad bigger battery... really, Apple? All in all, for newcomers to the iOS universe the iPhone 14 would be enticing as the cheapest 2022 iPhone model, but that's about it.

If we talk about the rumours, the phone seems like a small upgrade, at least for the base model. The same chipset means not much change in performance. I won’t call a new colour option as an upgrade. Yes, the ultrawide lens will likely be better than its predecessor, which we’ll find out later. So, the main question – is it really worth it? The time will only tell. I am waiting for the launch of the phone to grab my hands on the latest iPhone 14 and do a detailed review on the same. Stay tuned with cashify for the full Apple iPhone 14 review.

Apple A15 GPU 5-Core:
