Critiques pour le/la Apple MacBook Pro 15
Alu-Block Pro 15". Les nouveaux portables Apple MacBook Pro de 5ème géneration, on été totalement remaniés. Le plus intéressant est que la coque est faite à partir d'un seul bloc d'aluminium, deux cartes graphiques, un touchpad en verre. Ce test vas nous permettre de voir ce que ce portable "professionnel" vaut.

As far as upgrades go, the top-of-the-line 15in MacBook Pro's makeover is far from extreme. But we're not going to complain if Apple chooses to gently boost the processor speed a little bit without expecting a penny more for the effort. Except for a minor boost in processor speed, the new 15in 2.66GHz MacBook Pro is identical to the 15in 2.53GHz MacBook Pro it replaces. The minor speed boost, without a similar boost in price, can only be good news. And if you bought the 15in 2.53GHz MacBook Pro when it shipped in February 2009, you won’t have a bad case of buyer’s remorse.

When the latest 13- and 15-inch MacBooks were announced in October 2008, a similar revamp of the larger 17-inch version of the MacBook Pro was conspicuously missing from the lineup. In January of 2009, Apple announced the 17-inch model would be getting the same "unibody" aluminum chassis, buttonless (or more accurately, all-button) touchpad, and edge-to-edge glass on the LED backlit display. A little late to the party, Apple's redesigned 17-inch MacBook Pro joins the 15-inch model with a redesigned aluminum body, new trackpad with expanded functionality, and a dual-graphics setup for either longer battery life or better performance.

After spending a few days using the Macbook, I have to say that I came away impressed. On the surface, the new Macbook is a stunner that is sure to catch the eye of any gadget enthusiast. I also like the inclusion of the bigger trackpad with touch gestures, which makes things like browsing webpages to simple tasks of navigating around the notebook a breeze. In terms of performance, it’s hard not to like the Macbook. It’s a solid performer and packs enough punch to handle basic games and video/photo-editing applications.

It’s reasonable, but the Fujitsu Siemens and Lenovo X300 offer more. It’s also obvious that more laptop is available for far less this month. The Pro isn’t cheap, and there’s no HDMI output, fingerprint reader, card reader or ExpressCard slot – all common elsewhere. If you’re willing to forego these features for the stunning design and solid build quality, the Pro is worth considering. Just take a close look at the less expensive alternatives here before you buy. New models were released as we went to press, with more power, but they are similarly expensive for the specification.

Considered by itself the late-2008 MacBook Pro is simply a disappointing, but just about acceptable upgrade from its predecessor. However, when taking the newly-updated MacBook into account, it becomes hard to recommend the larger, significantly more expensive system over its smaller sibling. Apple has effectively beaten itself out of its own market.

The improvements in design and specs make the MacBook Pro one of the best laptops Apple has offered. This flagship portable continues to impress—not only in the design department, but in performance, too. From out-of-the-box to starting the OS to firing up applications, the company has made the experience completely seamless and enjoyable. Although some of Apple's choices are questionable, they are minor compared to how well the machine works.

The new MacBook Pro is unquestionably Apple's most revolutionary notebook to date, the build quality is simply unmatched, while its size and weight to performance ratio is excellent; allowing you to multi-task and game comfortably (just don't expect desktop level performance.) As with all Apple products, price is the most significant barrier to entry and while the MacBook Pro did get some significant spec bumps it still loses out to other PC models on specs alone. That being said, you are mostly paying for compact size, elegant design and, of course, OS X, and with that in mind the new MacBook Pro is easily worth the price.

The biggest disappointment with Apple's new MacBook Pro remains the withdrawal of the non-reflective matt screen option on the notebook’s display. And for anyone familiar with recent pre-Unibody models of Apple’s MacBook Pro, there is no appreciable performance benefit gained from the new processor and RAM. That’s only part of the story though, as the revised Multi-Touch trackpad’s versatility, along with the prestigious fit-and-finish of milled aluminium still combine to make make an attractive proposition for a state-of-the-art notebook computer.

The new MacBook Pro’s discrete Nvidia graphics and LED-backlit display make a practical usability addition to the MacBook Pro, but the unibody frame and buttonless multi-touch pad can mostly be called frivolous revisions – albeit pretty ones. If anything, the Pro’s price of $1,999, or $2,499 for the premium version, would be the biggest deterrent to purchasing one, since the same performance can definitely be had cheaper from other manufacturers. Apple’s knack for design, though, is untouchable, and it has definitely reached the pinnacle of refinement in the super-sleek MacBook Pro.

There’s a lot to like about the MacBook in terms of design and build. The look is awesome and it’s most certainly one of the sturdiest and well built laptops out there. The fact you have the fantastic Leopard OS X operating system and can also use Windows Vista via the BootCamp feature means you can have the best of both worlds in terms of operating systems. But is the cost of $1,299 justifiable for the feature set you get? Given the competition it’s hard to justify paying this much when there are PC alternatives for $800 that offer more features than the MacBook.

The MacBook Pro is an excellent laptop, but we find it difficult to recommend. It's great in its own right, but it offers relatively little in comparison to the standard MacBook, except perhaps in gaming terms. If you can afford it and can live with its numerous foibles, it'll be fine, but given the price, our money's with its little brother.

The new MacBook Pro may not fly off the shelves in the same numbers as the new MacBook – or tempt many PC ‘switchers’ into the Mac fold – its twin graphics processors, larger screen and Firewire should be enough to ensure that existing MacBook Pro users will be more than happy to upgrade to this new model.

The 2008 MacBook Pro is a solid update to the already-solid line. The changes modernize Apple's pro notebooks to be more in line with the features already offered by some of Apple's other notebooks, while also giving it a power boost and an internal makeover. The glossy screen may be a downside for some, but we feel that the sum of the other changes—extensive multitouch support, more GPU options in your day-to-day life, and the updated casing/frame/keyboard design—make up for any lost points. And of course, it doesn't hurt that it is a pretty decent gaming machine, too.

In terms of raw number crunching, there's little to differentiate the MacBook Pro line-up from its cheaper siblings – though there's a £210 2.8GHz built-to-order option that the cheaper MacBooks lack – but the MacBook Pro line-up represents a more refined, complete laptop. The screen is bigger and better, the graphics more accomplished and the connectivity options more fleshed-out. There's a strong argument that says that the MacBook is such an accomplished laptop these days – and is now finished in so similar a way to the MacBook Pro – that nobody needs the extra bells and whistles of the pricier line. The difference in price between the low-end MacBook Pro and the high-end MacBook (the two with the same 2.4GHz CPU) is only £250, however, and we should see Snow Leopard do impressive things with the dual GPU when it comes.

Apple's redesigned 15-inch MacBook Pro boasts a redesigned aluminum body that's stunning, thin, and sturdy; a new trackpad with expanded functionality; and a dual graphics setup for either longer battery life or better performance, but there's now less incentive to spend extra for it because its 13-inch mainstream cousin received a greater overhaul.

When it comes to design, performance, and innovation, there’s no question that Apple’s latest 15-inch MacBook Pro is a stunning notebook. Its looks, dual graphics cards, intuitive multi-touch trackpad, and sturdy design make it one of the best mainstream laptops on the market today. However, we were expecting a bigger jump in performance between the integrated and discrete Nvidia graphics cards. Plus, $2,499 is a lot to pay for a notebook, especially when there are plenty of Windows machines that offer comparable performance—not to mention Blu-ray, a higher-res display, HDMI, a memory card reader, and an extra USB port—for considerably less. For example, if you don’t need switchable graphics and you’re willing to carry more weight, you can get all of the above features and the key specs for the higher-end MacBook Pro in the 15.4-inch HP Pavilion dv5t for $1,853 ($646 less than the MacBook Pro).

The 15-inch MacBook Pro has always been a distinctive proposition, and the latest update does nothing to change that. If anything, Apple has further distinguished the machine from rivals, and not in entirely a conventionally positive way. There’s no denying that the casing and overall design is beautiful, that the interface is highly user-friendly and OS X Leopard remains an elegant alternative to the often muddled world of Windows. Power benefits from the latest Centrino 2 evolutions, and the switchable graphics put at least some of the choices of battery versus ability in the hands of the user. Yet the stubborn avoidance of what has now become mainstream features - memory card readers, eSATA, a 3G WWAN option - will only serve to marginalize the MacBook Pro with would-be buyers.

So should you be impressed? Of course you should, this is Apple turning its design eye to the laptop and making a very high-end shiny toy that is likely to appeal to the Mac set through and through.
However the MacBook Pro doesn't go completely unscathed. If this was my full time machine (I currently use a MacBook Pro) the two USB sockets so close together would frustrate me when it comes to being online and accessing a USB stick - it would be impossible. So should you rush out and buy one? It seems Apple are oblivious to the credit crunch, and at £1399 for the basic model and £1749 for the model we've reviewed here, you'll have to pay for those new and exciting features.

Rarely does Apple update an entire line of laptops in one fell swoop. While the new aluminum MacBooks didn't come as a surprise, a new MacBook Pro seemed like a long shot. This latest crop of MacBook Pros benefit from a new manufacturing process and host of performance tweaks that keep them among the best notebooks on the market. The MacBook Pro is a design marvel like no other, but you can find better features elsewhere.
