Like its less expensive sibling, the Fire HD 8 Plus is generally a good value for those looking for an affordable content consumption device. But because the internal upgrades over the base model aren't that substantial, and the added special features aren't that useful in the grand scheme of things, I just don't think most people should get it over the Fire HD 8.

Physically indistinguishable from the cheaper Fire HD 8, the Plus offers a slightly swifter but otherwise identical tablet experience. Wireless charging is the most significant difference, with the optional Dock making it a viable Echo Show alternative. The Plus is the smarter choice for owners of the 2018 version, but with an unchanged display and similar skills, the standard model is an equally capable entertainment slate for new Prime subscribers.

Amazon's Fire tablet lineup has long been a favorite of ours as good, simple value for the money. Each uses a variant of the Android OS which is tilted heavily toward accessing Amazon services, but also good for streaming video and reading. The particularly important feature here is Show Mode, which makes the tablet act like a hands-free Echo Show smart display, displaying the time and responding to Alexa queries. The new Fire HD 8 Plus ($109.99 and up) is a gray Fire HD 8 tablet with more RAM, wireless charging, and a slightly higher-powered charger. That wireless charging, along with the optional charging dock, really make a difference here, turning the Fire HD 8 Plus into an Echo Show you can take with you. The audio isn't nearly as good as a real Echo Show—you won't use it to bop around to rich music in your living room—but that's a fair trade-off for portability.

Amazon’s pricing is perhaps the Fire HD 8 Plus’ most endearing feature. With a starting cost of just $109.99, it’s hard to beat. You can ratchet up the storage and choose between an ad-supported and non-ad-supported experience. I think the 32GB model without ads is the best option. You save yourself the hassle of ads and can spend the $30 upgrade fee for the 64GB model on a much higher capacity microSD card (or a case) for the tablet.

Its $109.99 price is really $139.99 once you add the dock, but what Amazon offers here is enough for a lot of people—the Plus makes a great little Echo Show-alike to display recipes or act as a fancy alarm clock, plus play videos for the kids, for instance. If you need an inexpensive tablet with full Google Play app compatibility, check out Walmart's Onn. 8-inch tablet instead.

With models available in 7-, 8- and 10-inch screen sizes and priced as low as $50 before Prime Day discounts, Amazon's line of Fire tablets have long been the go-to option for bargain gadget hunters. But with its 2020 refresh of the 8-inch Fire HD 8 tablet, long the Goldilocks of its line, Amazon is adding a twist that may leave you wondering which one to buy. There are now two 8-inch models to choose from: a baseline Fire HD 8 starting at $90 (£90), and the $110 (£110) Fire HD Plus, which adds wireless charging and slightly better performance. The tablet isn't available in Australia but the starting price converts to about AU$160.

The Fire HD 8 Plus is kind of terrible to use if you try to use it as a full-on tablet. But if you just treat it as an appliance for launching Amazon’s big library of content, it’s actually kind of great.

The Fire HD 8 Plus is an affordable tablet that's substantially built, with the convenience of wireless charging giving the potential for use as an Echo Show if you buy the additional dock, making it a convenient affordable home tablet. It's not the most glamorous tablet, but it's hard to beat it for value for money.

Amazon's latest HD8 tablet delivers a performance boost over the prior generation and a new HD8 Plus model that adds a little more RAM and wireless charging.

The question for many people will be whether it’s worth spending the extra on the Plus over the regular model. And the simple answer is no. Unless you’re going to get the wireless dock and use it like an Echo Show, you may as well save your money. The standard HD 8 has the same Show Mode and can be used in the same way. The Plus' performance isn’t noticeably better, either.

The Amazon Fire series has been offering budget tablets to the masses for almost a decade now, and the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus is the newest in the range (alongside an updated Fire HD 8). It continues the long run of solid, cheap, reliable devices, and we've been testing one out for the past few days.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus is great for families and lightweight users that can't justify splurging on the cheapest iPad. But, if you don’t use any of Amazon’s services then you’re better off elsewhere.

ARM Mali-G52 MP1:
