The Amazon Fire HD 8 is not an excellent performer in any category, but it does offer you all the basics. If you’re very tight on cash but would like a portable screen to entertain you, then this will do the job adequately and does support many popular apps, but you can’t expect blistering performance to support top-end games, or pristine camera quality when you’re making video calls. As long as you manage your expectations with its price tag in mind, then you’ll probably find that this tablet is solid enough to do what you need it to do.

Amazon's 2022 Fire HD 8 remains good at what it is designed to do: stream Amazon content. If you're a Prime subscriber and want a small, affordable device to use on the couch, in the kitchen, or even with a stand to impersonate an Echo Show, the Fire HD 8 isn't bad. But if you can afford it, the 10-inch model offers a much better overall experience and remains our top pick. If you really want to score a deal, wait for the next Prime Day to roll around, when, typically, Amazon's Fire tablets can be had for half-price.

When I unwrapped the Amazon Fire HD 8 (2022), I was excited to finally play with a low-cost tablet. It’s a device that people can easily afford, and upon first impression, it felt great in my hand. However, once I turned it on, it became clear this isn’t the tablet for me. The form factor is perfect, and the screen quality tradeoff makes sense for the price, but the processor in this so-called new tablet is very slow — far too slow for 2022.

There are plenty of things about the Fire HD 8 (2022) that can be counted as negatives – Fire OS is still unnecessarily restrictive, the screen feels outdated and the charging speeds remain sluggish – but even with these flaws, you’ll struggle to find a better tablet that costs this little. Just about managing to justify the £10 price bump with sizable leaps in performance and battery life, the Fire HD 8 (2022) inches ahead of its predecessor to be the best choice for this budget. You can go even cheaper and pick up an Amazon Fire 7 for as little as £60, but if you have £100 to play with, your money is better spent on the Fire HD 8 (2022).

The new Fire HD 8's biggest strength is the same thing that has consistently made the Amazon Fire tablet so appealing in the past: it's an affordable and easy way to get access to movies, TV shows and games. It won't give you the same performance or feature set you'd get from a much more expensive Samsung or Apple tablet, but it gets all the basics right. It's definitely best seen as a device to access Amazon's popular services. So if you want something you can carry around with you and still get your Prime Video fix, enjoy fun casual gaming, Kindle books and Alexa smarts, but don't want to pay a small fortune for the privilege, the Fire HD 8 is the tablet for you.

If you want a cheap tablet that you can throw in the bag or use as a smart home display, the Fire HD 8 has you covered. It offers all-day battery life (and then some), while providing enough of an upgrade in the performance department to warrant your hard-earned dollars.

When Amazon upgraded the Fire HD 8 in 2020, it made a couple of notable design changes, including moving the location of the front-facing camera and adding USB-C charging, plus wireless charging for the HD 8 Plus, that made it feel like an overall more significant upgrade than the one you get with this year's Fire HD 8 (2022). But given all the supply chain issues and inflationary pressures, it's about what I was expecting from a new model and in line with Amazon's formula for incremental upgrades -- most notably that aforementioned hexa-core processor -- that move the needle forward enough to justify a small price increase. As I write this, the previous-gen HD 8 (2020) is down to $45 and the Fire HD 10 is $75. With those prices, it's hard to call the new HD 8 a bargain at $100. But you'll certainly see some nice discounts on it throughout the year, and that's when to nab it.

If you’re a Prime subscriber and won’t miss Google apps you might be able to live with the Fire HD 8’s limited selection of apps, mediocre performance and terrible cameras. Most people will be better off with a slightly more expensive Android tablet, but the HD 8 does make for a good kid’s tablet.

The 2020 version of this tablet had an optional wireless charging dock that'd turn the pair into a smart display, and I really liked that. One of the biggest question marks about using a tablet is what you do with it when you're not using it. At least the 2020 version tried to address that point. Then there's the Fire HD 8 Plus for an extra $20 that has an extra gig of RAM and a better-but-still-don't-use-it camera. Oh, and that tablet has wireless charging as well. So really overall, it seems like the Fire HD 8 tablet exists solely so Amazon can say "The all-new Fire HD 8 tablet starts at just $99.99 (but seriously, drop an extra Jackson for the Plus version). So, I'm just left wondering why this tablet exists. For half the price you get a similar experience on a slightly smaller and slightly lower res screen with the Fire 7. For $20 more, with the Fire HD 8 Plus, you get a better experience with more RAM and wireless charging. This tablet just sits in the middle. So, for my money, I'd skip this one and go with either of those other two options.

The Fire HD 8 is a clear step up from the entry-level Fire 7. While the Fire 7 has an appealing $59.99 price, its low-resolution screen and slow processor are enough reasons to move up to the Fire HD 8. Yes, the Fire HD 8 is still a little slow, its cameras are mediocre, and its screen isn't as sharp as more expensive devices. But when you consider how affordable it is, it becomes an appealing option for Amazon Prime subscribers, first-time tablet buyers, or anyone seeking a robust spare slate to carry on adventures. If you're concerned about performance or screen quality, however, the Fire HD 10 is faster and has a sharper, brighter screen, and thus retains our Editor's Choice award.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is a tablet that gives you the bare minimum for streaming video on the go. If you use Amazon's other services, like Amazon Music or Amazon Alexa to control your home, you'll find more to like with the Fire HD 8. It can't compete with the cheapest Samsung options, but if you need a cheap tablet and you find this one on sale, it's a fine impulse buy.

ARM Mali-G52 MP2:
