If you're looking for an affordable tablet that showcases all things Amazon, the new Fire 7 Tablet is a decent option at just $60. The slight performance improvement and significantly boosted battery life justify its slightly higher cost than the previous model. Whichever storage or ad configuration you choose, it's difficult to beat the price. You do have to go into the experience, however, knowing that it will work best with an Amazon Prime Subscription ($139 per year). If you're not invested in Amazon's ecosystem and don't want to pay for a Prime subscription, but still want an Android tablet at a rock-bottom price, look at something like the 8-inch onn. Tablet ($83); we haven't reviewed the latest model yet, but we liked the 2019 version.

The line that Amazon has always tried to walk with its Fire 7 tablets is cutting prices low enough to blitz the competition, while still offering enough functionality to be worth buying. This delicate tightrope act hasn’t always paid off – the 2019 model definitely wobbled along the way – but the balance feels much better here. It’s no iPad, but for a tablet that at most costs £80, and can be had for as little as £60, this is better than it has any right to be. If you need something cheap and simple, and you can overlook a mediocre display and an obnoxious operating system, the All-new Amazon Fire 7 (2022) is the best budget tablet around.

The Amazon Fire 7 remains one of the most affordable tablets you can buy, giving easy access to the latest entertainment services. It's housed in a durable case with parental controls for those who want to give it to kids. But there are limitations to what you get for this money. It's generally slow, the UI is dated and the Amazon Appstore feels like it could be more refined. You get what you pay for, they say, and that's the case with the Fire 7. It's certainly good value for money, but the experience matches the price.

The Amazon Fire 7 is the plucky underdog in the tablet world: it doesn’t have a gimmick, it doesn’t have class-leading specs and it won’t have you throwing out your iPad any time soon. But it doesn’t need any of those things because it occupies such a unique space, and that's being a functional and entertaining tablet for roughly the price of half a tank of petrol.

Despite some sizable complaints, it’s still amazing that you can get a functional tablet for $60. The Fire 7 won’t be for everyone, and if you already have a high-end smartphone, then a slightly larger tablet that’s slow and clunky probably won’t appeal. But if you’re looking for a super-affordable tablet for watching streaming video on trips or on your commute, or another way to tap into social media and casual web browsing, then the Fire 7 can meet those budget-conscious needs. Steer clear if you put performance over price, though.

The Amazon Fire 7 sees a bit of a price bump, but that comes with a performance improvement and a slight design change with USB-C. It may not be the best tablet, but for this cheap, it doesn't matter.

If you’re looking for a small, cheap tablet for reading, watching videos, or listening to audiobooks, the Fire 7 is decent — and at this price, decent is acceptable. I’d particularly recommend it as an alternative to the $89.99 Kindle. The Fire 7 offers a higher-density 171ppi display, more storage options, and access to the same Kindle ecosystem — and it plays videos. Plus, based on my experiences with its predecessor, it should last you a relatively long time. While my old Fire 7 is frustratingly slow, it hasn’t actually gotten worse over the years. I expect this version will be technically usable for at least three years, too.

As I was writing this review, one word kept popping into my mind: adequate. This is an adequate tablet for most users. It runs apps adequately, provides access to an adequate range of features and services and has adequate battery life. So, adequate. And, for the price, that’s fair enough – this is a cheap tablet that will perform adequately. The other thing to consider with the Fire 7 is that you aren’t just buying a tablet; you are buying into Amazon’s entire ecosystem. You buy books and movies from Amazon using built-in apps. You buy other apps from Amazon. You buy stuff from Amazon. Of course, there’s a pattern there: Amazon for all things. If that isn’t an issue for you, then this is a great pick for a spare tablet or one for the kids that you won’t mind if they break it. (You could also consider a tablet like the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition for younger children, as they are more resilient and come with a free replacement guarantee). But, bottom line and overall, the Fire 7 is an adequate tablet for Amazon users.

Once again, I'll reiterate — this device is incredibly cheap. Comparing it to a premium tablet from Samsung or Apple is unfair, as they can cost as much as ten times what the Fire 7 sometimes goes for. But ultimately, you get what you pay for; this thing runs worse than a $150 phone. The little quality of life features the Fire version of Android is obviously lacking also take away from the experience massively. It's a bunch of small things you can work around, but both the OS itself and several apps in the store seem to be borderline abandonware. Amazon can boast about the processor being a touch faster, or RAM being added, but corner-cutting features like the camera and the janky software will make you think you've picked up a second-hand device that was released years ago. At the price, you probably won't feel hard done by if it winds up in a desk drawer and only comes out when you want to distract a house guest you're not fond of. But equally, there are better things to spend your money on. The device itself is underpowered; basic things like the cameras and speakers are terrible, the app selection is limited, and the store you're forced to use for those apps is worse. There may be an argument for picking one of these up at a deep discount if you're looking for a beater tablet, backup device, or full-color Kindle alternative. However, if Amazon had these on sale and I had a spare $30 in my account, I'd probably just order a pizza instead.

The Amazon Fire 7 tablet’s appeal does not lie in its specs, but rests squarely on its uber-affordable price tag. Customers may be prepared to forgive many shortfalls if the price is at least too low to be regrettable, and that’s likely to be the case with this tablet. The performance is achingly slow, the screen is dingy and lacks detail, and the cameras are woeful. However, if you just want to buy this to entertain a child by playing undemanding games or educational content on it, then its likely to do the trick. What’s more, the enduring battery life will keep it rolling for a good long time.

The thing you should know about Fire tablets is that they aren’t typical Android devices – you’ll need to sideload the Google Play Store, for example, if you want to use Google apps. Amazon’s proprietary interface prioritizes its own apps like Prime Video and Kindle over others. But if you already heavily rely on Amazon services, I can see how the Fire 7 might be tempting – it delivers an Amazon-curated experience for cheap. Unfortunately, if you want a tablet in the $60 price range, you don’t have many non-Amazon options. Two of the more affordable non-Amazon tablets at this time appear to be the Lenovo Tab M7 (starting at $96) and the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite (starting at $100). We haven’t reviewed them just yet, but both at least let you use Google apps without resorting to third-party options. If you’re dead set on a budget Fire tablet, I actually recommend the Fire HD 8 instead. It has a superior HD display, longer battery life and wireless charging. It also supports Show Mode, which basically turns it into a portable Echo Show.

Yes, but only if you know what you’re getting yourself into. The 2022 Fire 7 is a great device if you’re just looking for a screen that you can stream movies to, read e-books on, and play simple games with. If you’re wanting anything other than that or find Fire OS to be irritating, I’d recommend looking for a different tablet. At the price, however, it’s tough to beat.

Should you buy it? Well, you are not really even getting HD resolution if you are watching video content from Prime Video, Disney Plus or Netflix. This is the type of content that people using a multipurpose tablet for, and the picture quality isn’t really that good. If you listen to audio content such as audiobooks, podcasts, or Spotify, the single speaker isn’t that bad, but it isn’t good either. You will get a better audio experience using headphones. What about books, magazines, manga, newspapers and other content? It only has 160 PPI, so the text won’t be as razer sharp as a Kindle Paperwhite. In the end, the Fire 7 2022 edition doesn’t do anything great and does not excel at anything either. You get what you pay for, if you want a high resolution screen with Dolby audio or a super high resolution display, you will have to spend some serious money, such as an iPad Mini which retails for over $500 or one of the Samsung Galaxy tablets which range in price from $200 to $500. If you want to buy something very affordable just to occasionally read or listen to audiobooks, it does the job.

Amazon’s 2022 entry in its super-cheap tablet line brings a few upgrades over the predecessor, notably a USB-C port for faster charging, but a price increase stops it from being an instant must-buy. Overall, the latest model has the strengths and weaknesses of the 2019 Model: it’s cheap and small, but the screen isn’t great and there’s not much processing power.

As this review notes in the plentiful, the Amazon Fire 7 isn’t the best tablet that money can buy. What makes this tablet unique is that it unapologetically aims for a small price tag. Practically everything about this tablet can be better, but that would be missing the forest for the trees. It’s not meant to replace your computer, your phone, and not even your iPad. The point of this tablet is to lower the bar of entry into the Amazon ecosystem and to continue to act as a gateway into it. The low price means you can purchase a few and forget about them, and pick them up when switching to your phone or a good iPad isn’t an option. With Prime Day deals, one can snag this one for even lower than its starting price of $60, at which point it becomes a bit of a no-brainer to keep one in the house just because. Keep one on the kitchen table, one on the coffee table next to the sofa, one in the garage, and hand one to each of your kids — that’s the kind of adoption that Amazon is aiming for with the Fire 7. So that the next time you use a display, you have a higher chance of using an allied Amazon service,...

The Amazon Fire 7 is the smallest member of Amazon’s tablet family. The latest refresh adds a bit more power and a lot more battery life to the remarkably affordable tablet. Starting at $59, it is $10 more than its predecessor, but still considerably cheaper than any other mainstream tablet on the market. That price is enticing, you could buy five of them and still not hit the price of a single iPad. But as you would expect, you also aren’t getting the same functionality as an iPad. The Amazon Fire tablets are excellent delivery vehicles for Amazon content like reading in the Kindle app, listening to books in the Audible app or watching streaming shows on Amazon Video. Amazon Fire 7 (2022) (16GB Black) at Amazon for $59.99. It isn’t limited to Amazon only, virtually every streaming video platform is available in the Amazon App Store for Fire OS, along with thousands of other apps, but you just need to set your expectations properly before picking up a Fire tablet.

If you’re looking for an ultra-affordable tablet to watch your favorite shows or read Kindle books while you travel, the Amazon Fire 7 (2022) is a good pick. It’s about as far from the most powerful tablet as you can get, but the price tag is comfortably under $100, so you never really have to worry about a few bumps or knocks. Amazon’s Fire OS might be an adjustment for some people with its lack of Google apps and services, but it’s much easier to feel like you’re on vacation without Gmail or Google Drive in your face. You should have no grumbles grabbing the Fire 7 as a tablet for a grandparent or a casual user, but it’s not one for gamers or anyone looking to do more than the basics. The kids’ version is an even better buy for youngsters with its thick bumper case and curated content library, though it does tip the price over $100.

There are enough upgrades and improvements here to make the Fire 7 well worth the extra $10 / £10 over its predecessor. It’s great to have longer battery life, slightly improved performance and the USB-C port, which makes it so much easier to attach the charging cable. The tiny price means you’ll have to live with dismal photo and video quality from the cameras, and the low-resolution screen. For $30 / £30 more, you could instead get the Fire HD 8 that has a bigger, higher resolution screen, double the storage, better sound and even longer battery life, but you’ll still be stuck with the same cameras and the same limitations in terms of app choice. There aren’t really any comparable Android tablets at this price, especially if you want to stick to known brands such as Samsung. If your budget won’t stretch further than $60 / £60, this is the best tablet you can hope for, but just don’t expect too much.
