If you're in the market for an affordable Blu-ray player, the Acer Aspire 5920G is a fantastic bargain. It excels as an entry-level laptop and also shines when connected to a larger HDTV, so unless you require top-of-the-range power or mobility, there's plenty to recommend.

The Acer Aspire 5920 Gemstone's white insides and gimmicky interior won't be to everyone's tastes, but if you can forgive that then this is a fast, well-featured laptop for just under £400.

Acer's Aspire AS5920-6959 is a laptop for those looking for processing power and storage capacity. It comes with a higher grade Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a suprisingly large hard drive compared than the average budget laptop. The drawback is that this system is bulkier than most featuring a 15.4-inch screen and they put too much trialware on it that can bog things down.

It may not excel in any particular area, but there's a lot to recommend in the Acer Aspire 5920-5A3G25Mi. It has excellent usability and an attractive design that makes it worth a look if multimedia capabilities aren't a priority.

The Acer Aspire 5920-6954 just slips under the $1000 mark, at $999 (as of 2/7/08); it's worth every penny. Except for business applications, which it lacks, this Vista Home Premium laptop has just about everything home-office buyers could ask for in a solid budget notebook. Moderately powerful laptop has dedicated nVidia graphics, HDMI output, and an HD DVD reader.

Despite its many flaws the Acer Aspire 5920 is one of the best buys today thanks to its rich specification, wealth of features and relative low price. I believe a proper new bios would solve the fan issue and CPU management, and a new Nvidia driver should let us use powermizer to reduce GPU heat. That leaves us waiting for a decent LCD panel from Acer or getting one of those LCD films to enhance the blacks. Like its name suggests, the Acer 5920 gemstone is truly a diamond in the rough and with a bit of polishing would shine.

It's not the most portable of laptops but the Acer Aspire 5920 is powerful, looks smart and offers a decent collection of features for the price. The new Intel Santa Rosa technology looks to be working well, and the impressive audio quality and generous hard drive help make this a particularly strong entertainment notebook.

Acer's new Gemstone chassis makes its bedut in the Aspire lineup of systems. This is either a design you will like alot or loathe. In terms of the Aspire AS5920, it is billed as a multimedia thin and light notebook and it delivers this with its HD-DVD drive for playback of high definition movies but the drives inability to record to the format and high price tag make it only an average system.

Notebooks are evolving and no more so than in their presentation.
There was a time when manufacturers would be happy with a simple grey box. Now, they’re trying to tempt us with an array of designs and styles. Take, the new Aspire 5920G, which has been designed by the BMW Designworks and to a large extent shows, as the glossy black finish at first appearance looks like the finish found on a car. What’s more important is the quality of the finish and this has to be commended. We found the 5920G solid and firm to the touch. The keyboard is large and the keys feel exceedingly firm to the touch – this is a great keyboard if you need to write a lot of reports, as it doesn’t force you to press too hard to respond. We weren't convinced by the touchpad and mouse buttons, which proved less responsive. You'll find touch-sensitive media buttons to the right of the keyboard, and hotkeys to the left, making it easy to launch applications and manage your movies or music.

Armed with a fast processor and solid speakers, the $1999 (as of July 24, 2007) Acer Aspire 5920G is great for both work and entertainment. It bears Acer's tritone "gemstone" case design, which looks stylish without being overly ornate. The screen is prone to some glare and battery life is so-so, but the machine can handle most types of applications. Driven by a 2-GHz Core 2 Duo T7300 processor and configured with 2GB of DDR2-667 SDRAM , the 5920G notched a very good WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 77--a few points above the mark achieved by a Dell Inspiron 1720 that carried the same processor and RAM. The Aspire's average frame rate in our graphics tests was 83 frames per second--not close to the average of 100 fps posted by recent gaming notebooks, but capable of supporting good game play nonetheless. The 5920G felt comfortable to use. The mouse buttons are slightly stiff, but the four-way scroll button for moving pages in any direction is nice.

Acer knows how to fight a price war when it comes to selling laptops, but its knack for designs hasn't been as memorable as some of its competition's. The only exception is the head-turning Ferrari series, highlighted by a carbon-fiber frame and racing-style red streaks. Now that PC makers are focusing more attention on design, the Ferrari line alone isn't enough to draw in the hipper crowd. But Acer is hoping to change all that with its Gemstone series, otherwise known as the Acer Aspire 5920G ($1,999 list). Aside from the sleeker look, the system integrates an HD DVD-ROM drive and 5.1 Dolby surround sound, and offers a bunch of other entertainment features at a price few can pull off. It's not often that Acer gets to combine an aesthetically pleasing design with good processing speed and affordable pricing.

The Aspire 5920G is a 15-inch multimedia Santa Rosa notebook based on Acer’s new gemstone concept. There are many new and interesting aspects to the Aspire such as 3D surround sound system and touch-sensitive media buttons. Featuring an impressive specification, but weighing almost 7 pounds with battery, this notebook is most suitable as a desktop replacement. The 5920G primarily targets gamers and power users with no desire to break the bank. The main reason for the purchase was that my family really needed another computer. This turns out to be a great opportunity for me to get an upgrade to replace my two-year-old Dell Inspiron 6000. I wanted a reasonably-priced laptop with a fairly powerful dedicated graphic card that can handle Vista, occasional gaming, 3D modeling, and video editing with ease. To be honest, I’ve shopped and waited for months before finally purchasing 5290G.

Acer isn't afraid to make bold design statements with some of its laptops, as witnessed by the bright red Ferrari range. Now the company has commissioned BMW's Designworks team to breathe some life into the Aspire range, the result being the Gemstone design. The first example of this teamwork to see the light of day is the Aspire 5920. The new design certainly creates a talking point and, while most people agree that the rounded design and the shiny black pearl external finish of the 5920 work well, opinion is very much divided when you open the lid. What confronts you is a pale grey, ceramic-type finish that some people love and some people think looks very old hat. In fact at first glance it does look like an old Compaq notebook, but as with so many other things it may well grow on you with time, albeit perhaps a long time.

When we reviewed the Blu-ray-equipped Sony VAIO FZ180 a few months ago, we wondered how big the market for 15.4-inch, high-def laptop could really be. Apparently, the market is big enough to warrant an entry from the other side of the fence: the Acer Aspire 5920 incorporates an HD DVD drive into its bulky midsize case. Differing HD formats aside, the two systems are remarkably similar. Both include HDMI support for easy integration to home theaters. Both incorporate Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 processors on the latest Centrino Duo platform. And both cost $1,999. The Sony offers the advantage of a sleeker design and lighter weight, while the Acer offers the advantage of a few extra features (S/PDIF audio, full Dolby Surround, Bluetooth connectivity) and a longer battery life.

Acer's Aspire 5920 hits a great sweet spot between price, design and functionality. It might not be most portable of beasts, but it should serve as a great desktop replacement which can be wheeled around the house for all sorts of functions. The low resolution screen may be a little disappointing, but Acer isn't alone in this and until higher resolutions become the standard it would be unfair to single it out in this regard. Thus, if you're in the market for Santa Rosa notebook, it's well worth waiting for this one to hit retail.
