The iQoo Z9x is a solid contender for a budget 5G smartphone in India. However, it does end up falling a bit short of the Moto G64 5G (Review) in some areas, including price. The Moto G64 5G is priced at an attractive Rs. 13,999 for the 8GB + 128GB variant and even has a 12GB + 128GB variant at Rs. 15,999, which is what the iQoo Z9x (8GB variant) I received for review retails for. Pricing aside, the G64 5G definitely has an attractive design, offers a clean and near-stock serving of Android 14 and has a primary camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) along with an ultrawide camera as well. Samsung's Galaxy M34 5G (launched last year) seems like a solid contender and is available from Rs. 14,999 for the 8GB + 128GB variant.

To democratise the 5G network, both network providers and smartphone makers must participate. With Jio and Airtel offering unlimited 5G internet, telcos seem to be doing their part. Now, with the launch of affordable 5G smartphones like the iQOO Z9x, OEMs also seem to be supporting the faster adoption of 5G in India.

So the iQOO Z9X 5G is a very ‘iQOO’ smartphone. It has a brilliant price-to-performance ratio, it looks the part, has great battery backup and charging speeds, and comes with a very good display for the price. The only place where I thought the smartphone struggles is the camera. But of course, people don’t buy iQOO smartphones for their cameras. iQOO has pulled another iQOO. The brand has launched the iQOO Z9X, which is like a toned-down version of the already affordable iQOO Z9. While I was reviewing the iQOO Z9X, I was under the impression that this would be launched in a range of under ₹15,000. However, iQOO launched the smartphone for a starting price of under ₹12,000 which is outstanding given how this smartphone performs.

The iQOO Z9x carries a starting price of Rs 12,999 for the 4GB + 128GB variant, Rs 14,499 for the 6GB + 128GB variant, and Rs 15,999 for the 8GB + 128GB variant. The closest rivals of the smartphone in its price range are the Moto G64 (review), POCO X6 Neo (review) and the Realme P1 5G (review). The Motorola G64 offers a stock Android-like UI and a similar 6,000mAh battery, while in comparison, the latter two feature an AMOLED display panel, which significantly improves the visual experience. The Realme P1 5G also offers a better performance output compared to the iQOO Z9x. For its price, the iQOO Z9x delivers impressive performance that dwarfs most similarly priced counterparts, a respectable visual experience, excellent battery backup, and a sleek design. While the cameras are not the best, they do a respectable job, and the other positive aspects more than compensate for it.

The iQoo Z9x surely seems to raise the bar when it comes to checking the boxes on a budget 5G smartphone. However, as we have seen with every budget 5G smartphone in the past, the focus has always been on offering a smooth 5G experience while ignoring camera performance and software optimisation. Has iQoo changed the game by cooking up something better? Stay tuned to our detailed review to find out.

Qualcomm Adreno 710:
